'''Who we are:'''

If you ask 3 Browns that question, you'll get at least 4 answers. We're not sure how to summarize that essential part of ourselves that drew us to the Brown Ajah. The core value of the Brown Aes Sedai is her love of knowledge and learning. We have a desire to know more about the world around us than we did yesterday, and to share what we know with others. Ask a Brown about her passion, and you'll get more information than you ever dreamed was out there!

''Some Browns seek to study whatever catches their interest, others focus solely on trying to find knowledge that has been lost, from the Age of Legends, or later.'' (The Great Hunt)

The Browns here at TarValon.net are no strangers to study. Many of us continue our education both in universities and in personal research; each finding our own niche and interests. Many of the Browns enjoy writing as well as research, several are bilingual, and we all enjoy learning from not just books but the people around us as well.

The Brown Ajah is not only about the quest for knowledge. It is also filled with Sisters, Warders, and Aspirants that are compassionate, thoughtful, and caring. We seek to learn not only about the world and history but about each other too. We are a close knit group that is calm and mellow and there is very little drama among us, unless we are rallying against a book burning of course! Many of us are quiet, and even a little shy, while others are a bit more outgoing. No matter their personality the Brown Ajah is filled with members that are kind and sincere and truly care for one another.

The Brown Ajah also has its own personal quirks and traditions. We are known for our love of cheese as well as indulging now and again in the spirit of Rum. We each have our own dust bunny that helps us to keep our books tidy, and many of the Sisters have a tendency to “Brown Out” on occasion.

If there is anything you should wish to know about, be it specific to the Brown Ajah or anything else, seek out a Brown Sister, Warder, or Aspirant as they are always willing to share the knowledge they have.
Brown-outs of the month

Cinnamin:

“Does somebody else's brownout count?

My company forgot to send out the shift schedule on time.. I found out today that I've got to work half shifts on Thurs & Fri.. then work my normal 12 hr shifts on Sat & Sun.”

Cariyad:

“I had a bit of a literary Brown-out.

After starting a reread of Pride and Prejudice, a very Jane Austen-like plot got stuck in my head. I couldn't for the life of me figure out which of her books it was, so decided it must have been a book from a similar time.

I remembered the plot in surprising detail so went a-googling to try and find out what it was. Nothing on any lists of classic books matched it! It was only when I started to ask a friend if she knew it that I realised that it wasn't the plot of a book -- but that of Becoming Jane, the movie based on Jane Austen's life”

Maddie:

“Okay... here's my most recent Brown Out...

I sing with a community choir. We do four concerts per year - two nights during December and two in the Spring. We've been rehearsing weekly for over two months now.

Monday night we are rehearsing at one of the concert locations. I'm looking through the list of songs, putting them in performance order in my folder. The last piece on the list - our encore piece - doesn't look familiar at all... my mind can't even recall singing it before.

I go through my folder three times trying to find it. During break, I even ask the director which piece this is and if we've rehearsed it. He says its one we've done several times before but he'll go over it again if needed.

I go through my folder one last time... and there it is, right where it should be! I look at it and immediately recall not only what song it is but that its one of my favorites among the dozen or so pieces we're singing!!

I tell the director I found it and we don't need to rehearse it. He chuckles and we start rehearsing again.”

Maddie:

“Almost forgot to report my Thanksgiving BrownOut!

I'm making a double batch of pumpkin pie filling. My mind is telling me: Gotta double the recipe, gotta double the recipe. So I measure out the sugar and spices. Then I look at the can of pumpkin I'm getting the recipe off of and realize its recipe is already sized for a double batch since the can of pumpkin itself is double the size of the normal cans.

Fortunately, I had only gotten to the point of combining the sugar and spices. I measured out half of the mixture, put it in a ziploc for future use and went on with the correct recipe. Pie came out super tasty and the extra spiced sugar came in handy later. I used it to season some mashed sweet potatoes and my husband said it was fantastic added to regular hot tea.”

Cinnamin:

“I did another 'classic' Saturday while getting ready for work. I'm cleaned up, dressed and getting everything together.. lunch, cigarettes, book, wallet, jacket.. but I can't find my glasses. Commence the room-to-room search.. ask Dave if he's seen them.. look some more.

Dave finally turns from his computer, looks at me and laughs. "They're on top of your silly head."

Yep I pushed them up out of the way to make lunch, and forgot that I'd done it.. and my hair is so thick, I couldn't feel them up there.”

Cassie:

“I had a fabulous one on Christmas Eve. I was heading to my grandmother's house, talking on the phone to Serenla about how I hoped I didn't forget how to get there. I got on the interstate heading North instead of South anyway. It took me 8 miles to figure it out...which is about how long our phone call lasted”

Adolla:

“My sister had one on Saturday. She drove from the Raleigh area to my uncles house in Asheboro about 60ish miles away, and only realized just outside of town that all the presents were sitting on the couch. So they stopped at Walmart and bought duplicates. We didn't do a formal exchange but rather a white elephant so it wasn't a big deal to buy new ones.”

Lillian:

“Christmas Eve I settled in for a few hours of World of Warcraft before everyone went their separate ways for Christmas. At the end of one run, I hadn't won the Bronze Drake mount, so my guildies were saying, "we'll run it again!" (these types of runs are only possible once a day) So, I say "Tomorrow?" and they are quiet for a moment and then someone says, "Lilli..........tomorrow is Christmas. We won't be here."”

Narysse:

“had to write a paper in November for my Comparative Religions class. So.....I spend the entire semester researching ancient uses for corn and its place in various rituals. Found some great quotes.

Spent the weekend before it's due writing it. Managed to get the entire 5-page paper done in 2 1/2 hours. A new record!!!!

Then, the day I *think* it's due, I'm sitting in class before it starts going through the paper, making sure it's not complete crap.

I managed to forget to cite an entire page!!!!!!!!!! 5 citations got left out!!!!!!!!

Then, I find out it's not even due till that Friday--it's Monday.

And after all that, I still got full marks on it.”

And:

“And during finals week, I kept making tea. Keeps me awake enough to study.

Anyway, one day I got everything ready for it....water's boiling, teapot is out.

I was halfway done with pouring my first cup before I realised I forgot to add the tea leaves!!”
Adolla:

“So I don't forget this time.
Quote:
<Adolla> oooo I had a brown out today

<Adolla> so my "job" if you can call it that since we only work every few months

<Adolla> is stuffing envelopes and sorting them for postage

<Adolla> etc

<Serenla> right

<Adolla> today we had a big order for the State of Conn.

<Adolla> well big for us, small so it was hand inserted

<Adolla> er I should say big to be hand inserted but too small to take up the time to set up a machine

<Adolla> not that any of this matters

<Serenla> please, continue

<Adolla> I was flipping through my stack of 100 to make sure the address showed

<Adolla> yeah I was rambling about stuff that wasn't important lol

<Serenla> never!

<Adolla>

<Adolla> so I found one where the return envelope was showing in the window

<Adolla> so I opened it to find no statement

<Adolla> I had inserted the return envelope and sealed it

<Serenla> hahaha

<Adolla> I was like wtf, no wonder I needed an extra envelope

I had to copy/paste because the whole rambling thing is so brown.”

Aloren:

“The other day when I got home from the store I got online and forgot to put away a bag of frozen stuff and relised it when I finaly went over to were the phone was charging to call someone

Then today when I got up because Eli finnaly called to drag me out of bed I went to turn on the comp and then relised I could see nothing because I forgot I had not put in my contacts.”

Cinnamin:

“I lost an entire day somewhere

I could have sworn I had already washed Dave's jeans..... nope.

I had to stay up past my bedtime and do laundry last nite, so he would have jeans to wear to work.

My Tuesday went missing and Wednesday snuck up on me”

Sindra:

“I was showering off on the pool deck at my gym, and before turning the fossett off... I walked away. I had to run back, it was so lame.”

Kyyri:

“Today my hubby calls me and says, "I could smack you" Now, I am in Missouri right now doing some training for the military, so I have no idea what he is talking about. Apparantly when he got home from work today there was a letter from the Columbus, Ohio police department. Inside was a ticket for running a red light. Somewhere in downtown Columbus, on July 8th, I ran a red light. The problem is, I don't even know where this intersection is. And it caught me on some 'red-light camera' the city installed about a year ago. But anywho, obviously I was driving around downtown and didn't even realize where I was.”

Shara:

“So I went to dinner with friends tonight in a run down stipmall, but great Chinese food, and when I was leaving, after sunset, but there is still light in the sky, I turned on the road to go home. A second later a cop flashes his lights and I pull over. I wasn't speeding so I have no idea what I did wrong, as I had used my blinker to pull into the road. So he comes over and I give him my insurance and drivers licenses. Apparently I had forgotten to turn my headlights on and he was just checking that I wasn't drunk, which I wasn't as I only had hot tea with dinner. So yeah I almost got a ticket for browning out.”
Brown-outs of the month

Cinnamin:

“Was fixing dinner.. part of this is fixing coffee. I was trying to do 2 or 3 things at once and was in a hurry. I got the filter out, dumped the old grounds, put in a new filter, put in new coffee, poured water in the reservoir, plugged it in and turned it on.
I forgot to put the filter cup with the new coffee back in place.”

Maddie:

“I was in #wheel and a bunch of folks were talking about what they were making for dinner. Caerwyn said he was making beef stroganoff. I attempted to reply with:

"Maddie wouldn't mind tasting Caerwyn's stroganoff"

However, my fingers slipped and I hit the Enter key instead of the ' key... resulting in:

"Maddie wouldn't mind tasting Caerwyn"

That got Wil and a few others laughing and teasing me for a bit. A little later, Caerwyn leaves. Someone then mentions sausages and I type:

"I love eating sweet Italian sausages".

Wil just about dies laughing... because Caerwyn is Italian. Which I didn't know.”

Shala:

“So, to clarify, I'm a broke-ass college student. Yesterday I had taken my last twenty dollars out of my bank account. I went to our local co-op to buy a jar of Vegenaise for my mom, because she can't find it at home, and then took the last 15.00 to the gas station to put it in my tank so I could come home this weekend for Mother's day. I started pumping gas, watched the price go up to five, ten...and the BLAM! Brownout.

When I snapped back to reality and let go of the handle it was at $19.61.

I started scrounging for change and came up with another $2.53. So here I am, standing next to my car with 17.53 to my name, going oh-shit-oh-shit-oh-shit.

Eventually I went into the counter and explained my plight to the (incredibly understanding, bless her heart) attendant there. As I was trying to figure out a way to come up with the extra 1.98 and apologizing profusely, an angel behind me in line handed me two dollars to cover the rest.”

Maddie:

“I called Adolla "Cassie" in the D*Con registration thread.”

Laith:

“OMG! Last night I was eating dinner and Kris had put too much salt on...well everything. (we had steaks and onions on the grill, corn on the cob, and dinner rolls but that is irrelevant) There was so much salt that for someone like me who never puts salt on anything it burned my tongue and caused it to bleed. So I decided I would just eat my corn and bread since they weren't salty and forgo the meat and onions. After a little bit we were just sitting at the table chatting about the day and what do I do? Take one of the olives out of my Bloody Mary and stick the stupid thing in my mouth! BRILLIANT! Put the one item of food that is soaked in salt brine in your mouth!”

Shara:

“Here is my biggest Brown out ever.
So I had made plans with Viv for her to pick me up on her drive down to Austin for Ari and Az's bonding. I thought that it was going to be over memorial weekend. So May 17, Sat. morning about 11:30 or so I pull back into my apartment from my trip to the grocery store and gather my bags and as I head to the stair case, low and behold Viv is walking towards me. I blink and say "Viv what are you doing here?" She says, "We are going to Austin this weekend, remember?" I say, "No that's Memorial weekend not this weekend." She blinks at me then calls Az and Murienn, neither pick up the phone. Then she calls Yele and she picks up and confirms that she is all ready on the road for Austin. We are now in my apartment and I put up the groceries. I say, "Well I guess I’m going to Austin today." As a side note, Viv had called me twice, but I had forgotten to change the volume from silent to loud.”

Lilli:

“So, Sunday I planned a nice dinner for me and Drake. I decided to make the iced tea and the chocolate pie early. I put the water in the pan for the tea, tossed in the tea bags, and proceeded to make the pie. I get done with the pie and I think, "why isn't the tea boiling?" Stared at it for about ten seconds before I realized I hadn't turned the burner on.”

Ismene:

“So, I was fixing myself up a frozen pizza. And I got the pizza tray all lined up with aluminum foil just right, and the oven started and everything.
Then, I went to go do some laundry, and chat with roommates and other stuff...

Twenty minutes passed, and I knew my pizza would probably be just about ready. I go to check on it, and...

I put the empty tray into the oven! And left the (still) frozen pizza on top of the stove! So, I hadn't even started cooking.”

Miri:

“I'd been standing a good fifteen minutes looking at a pot, and cursing it for not heating up properly, when I suddenly realised I hadn't turned the stove on...”
Brown Poll: Favourite time of day
The Bulletin editor’s brain is still tired (yay for babies!) and that’s why the poll’s again rather uninventive ( :look ) The next one will be more interesting, though, thanks to Darim! :D

Morning 5% [1]

Midday 0% [0]

Afternoon 17% [3]

Evening 41% [7]

Midnight 29% [5]

The small hours 5% [1]

So the Browns seem to be evening and night owls :lol
Brown-outs of the month

Adolla:

”Robert has made me drag out and dust off the bread machine. I made a loaf over the weekend and it disappeared. After one of those nights where I didn't sleep at all I went to work on Monday. I decided when I got home I'd surprise Robert and have another loaf ready. I cleaned out the pan washed up the mixing blade and got all the ingredients ready and turned on the machine. I went and laid down for a nap. I woke up and came into the kitchen. Robert informed me that the machine was beeping. I replied that he could have gotten the loaf out if he had wanted a slice. He gave me a funny look. I walk over to the machine and inside is a big lump o goo (tm). Apparently I forgot to replace the mixing blade after I washed it. The flour sorta sat on top of the water and some of it baked into a hard gooey lump. Not exactly what I had in mind for dinner.”

Madelaine:

“Three major Brown Outs this month:

1 - Assuming "Lia" in IRC was Laithean when she was really Liathiana. I carried on a 10 minute or so conversation before I finally realized she wasn't Laithean.

2 - Forgetting the real life name of my near-sister on another site as we were filling out our applications to become first-sisters.

3 - Reading a book in our local library and forgetting what time it was to the point that I had to run like mad to catch the bus home.”

Sindra:

“Not being able to remember what I did yesterday - every day.”

Lillian:

“So, I was sending some mail in-game in WoW, and I carefully look at the name to make sure I was sending it to the right person, and still sent it to someone who had a totally different name. Didn't even start with the same letter of the alphabet!”

Allin:

“I've been sitting at the computer in the university library for 20 minutes with the earbuds to my iPod in my ears....and I never turned the iPod on. I just realized it wasn't even on about a minute ago.”

Cassie:

“My best this month was driving home from work the other morning and thinking how beautiful the sun was when it was full...before I remembered that the sun doesn't go through phases like the moon does.”

Cinnamin:

“This happened yesterday. Our apartment complex has our mailboxes in groups and you have to have a key to open them. So I went downstairs, walked across the parking lot, then climbed the hill to get to the mailbox. Then I realized I left the mailbox key in the apartment.”

Rijomu:

“Background: I temp in restaurants, been in dozen places in the space of two months.
Today: I was taking apart the dishwasher as we were finishing the day. I screwed off the small valve and asked the person I was working with whether they preferred to leave the valve out for the night or should I put it back in. She told me to leave it out. I nodded, rinsed the valve and promptly put it back in.”

Serenla:

“I never remember my Brown Outs.”

Laithean:

“Me either Ren. I guess that is my biggest Brown out... Browning out on my Brown outs”

Maddie once more (she’s our Brown out queen! *snuggles*)

“Do sewing Brown Outs count?
If so... yesterday I was putting together the shoulder seam on an outfit and had to rip out threads and resew THREE TIMES because I kept putting the wrong side of the fabrics together... ie, instead of front side against front side I kept putting them front side against reverse side.”

Cariyad:

“Okay, so I work for a small business as a cleaner. I was taking the rubbish across to the rubbish room yesterday so went to get the key from reception. Walked across the building to the rubbish room and realised... I had the key to the safe. Which is completely different to the rubbish room key. Walked back, replaced key and picked up rubbish room key. Or at least I thought I did. Got back to the rubbish room and the key wouldn't fit in the lock. Turned out it was actually the key to the project room. Hmm.. Back across the building I go. Third time lucky!

You get some strange looks when you're apparently aimlessly wandering around an office building, rubbish bag in hand.”

And Maddie again (lol!):

“I just had another Brown Out.

I was sitting at my PC, chatting in IRC. Earlier, I'd filled a tall cup with iced tea and placed it next to my monitor. Well, when I finished my IRC stuff I couldn't remember where I put it. I wander around the room and even out to the kitchen before asking my husband if he'd seen it.

He gives me a :scratch look and tells me its still sitting right next to my monitor... in plain sight.”

Stasia:

“I had a Brown out last night... I have to write 8 essays that constitute our final exam in my International Travel class. Since we only meet once every few weeks, our teacher has us email them to her.

So... I sent the email both to my teacher of the history portion and as a CC to the teacher of the cultural portion, who I had in class today.

She said, "Amanda... there was a problem with your email..." and of course I was freaking out because I am perfectionistic about my grades, so I asked her what the problem was. "Well, I had a problem opening your attachment, because there wasn't one."”
Latin Quote of the Month by Cicero Dustbunny

So, I decided to ask the most honourable Cicero Dustbunny to introduce himself to Tarvaloners. His very first words of wisdom to us are:

“Legere Englarum possum sed manus scribendo non sordidarem.”

Which, of course means “Leisurely English possesses so many non-sordid scribbles.” according to our major BS Latin translator, accepted Cariyad.

(For those of you who - like me - aren’t able to read Latin, it actually means “I am able to read English, but I wouldn't soil my hands by writing in it.”)

Brown Poll: Favourite coffees
The Bulletin editor’s brain was tired, and she needed caffeine, thus the dull-ish poll of the month. It was about the favourite coffees of the Browns and guests.

Ordinary coffee with or without milk and/or sugar 4% [1]

Latte/cafe au lait 22% [5]

Cappuccino 13% [3]

Espresso 0% [0]

Ice coffee 4% [1]

Anything as long as I get my dose of caffeine 9% [2]

I don't drink coffee 45% [10]

Lots of tea-drinkers among the Browns!
Brown-outs of the month

Cassie:

“I had one for this...but I can't remember what it was”

Shara:

“I was on the phone with a co-worker and I couldn't think of the word contract so for I kept going um you know the um "con...con...con...con...the offer thing on paper the um con...con...con...oh right contract."”

Cariyad:

“I was coaching my debating team at lunch today. I was pretending to be the other team, arguing against my team's case.

Only I forgot what I was on about halfway through and started arguing for my team's case.

This is why we take rebuttal notes.”

Rinwyn:

“I was telling my mom about something funny that happened when I was 12 years old and said "When I was noon.." Took me a while to find out why she was laughing at me.”

Sela:

“Today Dralyn's husband (Jason) came to pick me up from an appointment, and for ten to fifteen minutes I looked from inside at the back of his car, not realizing it was his. A phone call sorted it out in the end, and I realized it was him.”

Kytera:

“I went swimming the other day and was talking to my sister on my mobile. I was packing everything into my locker and started looking for my phone to make sure that I had switched it off.

It wasn't until I said to Olga, 'Hold on a minute, I've lost my phone,' and she burst out laughing, did I realise that no, I had not lost the phone, I was using it at that very moment.”

Adolla:

“I went to call in my refills and I picked up my pill bottle dialed the number on the phone then put the bottle to my ear.”

Yveva:

“I have been in the same office for almost two years, and I'm the only on ein this office. Some of the things here I have brought in (stapler, plants), other things were left by the previous tenant (file cabinet, calculator). There is a cord that runs underneath my desk, and recently it started hanging down and it bugged me because I kept kicking it, so I went to tack it back up underneath the desk. Then I started thinking "what does this cord go to?" so I followed it along and discovered that it was an extension cord. "To what??" I thought, "everything electrical is on the other side of the desk...." I thought maybe it was to the phone?but then I realized that there was something else there on my desk, hiding a little behind the phone... an electric pencil sharpener that I was completely unaware was there! Now, my desk isn't that messy, and I have even cleaned off that part of the desk since taking on this office... so I guess at some point in time I knew that the sharpener was there, but that in the past year I have completely forgotten about it!”

Dracaenaa:

“And I always seen to be looking for things I have in my hand. Just today I was looking for something and the first place I thought to look was in my hand. That is getting bad when I remember that I'm that forgetful.”

Laithean:

“I was on my way to work yesterday, and I was carrying my purse, lunch bag, work out bag, and a bottle of water to my car... I am carrying all the bags on my left arm, and I switch the bottle from my right hand to my left hand so I can get my keys out of my pocket. I feel my coat pocket....nothing there.... I slap at the left coat pocket (which is difficult with your right hand when your left arm is full of stuff)....nothing..... I feel up under my coat to see if they are connected to my jeans belt loop (I do that in the summer usually)....nope no keys..... So I figure they must be in my purse. GREAT! Now I have to try and dig through my purse while holding everything else! I shift my arm to get at my purse, and what is next to the bottle in my left hand?

You guessed it! My bloody keys! In my left hand the whole time!

Definitely a Brown out moment!”
Brown Poll: Sex distribution among Brown pet dustbunnies
So, February Bulletin Poll was: “My dustbunny is…”

Female 12% [3]

Male 54% [13]

Undefined/can't remember :look 33% [8]

Most of the dustbunnies seem to be males. Here are some name examples:

Shara: “My dustbunny is Harvey. He is nice like Harvey the Pooka, but turns into the evil bunny from The Holy Grail if your mean to me!! Who needs a warder with a dustbunny like mine!”

Darim: “His name is Dux. ^^ He conquers other worlds (mostly beneath the furniture worlds) in my name.”

Sela: “Uh, yeah. Mine's male. And he has something of an ego problem.”

Serenla: “My bunny is George. And I will hug him and love him and squeeze him....”

Keara: “Mine is definitely male, though he tends to be a bit on the androgynous side recently. I forgot his name.” (later Sela searched our archives and found out that Keara’s bunny is called sir Hopsalot).

Allin: “Boy. Herman.”

Dracaenaa: “You know I can't remember...but I think it was male...and I think I remember naming him something like Frank but I'm not sure”

Shala: “I think mine's a boy, on account of it hasn't bitten me yet for calling it Bailey.”

Kheldin: “Abulafia is a dignified chap of indeterminate age.”

Taika: “Mine's male. His name is Ezr and he's an amazing levitating dustbunny.”

And of course we can’t forget our civilized latin-speaker:

Cicero Dustbunny: “Cuniculus vir sum.”

There were also three female dustbunnies:

Miriya: “Female. Name's Verdande, which is the modern spelling of the name of one of the Fates (Norns) in Norse mythology.”

Madeleine: “My dust bunny is female and named Tayla, after a character from Stargate: Atlantis.”

Cinnamin: “My Snuffles is a girl.”

And of course the undefined/androgynous ones:

Rijomu: “I respect my bunny's privacy and don't ask it any prying questions.”

Naomi: “My dust bunny's name is Dustie but after extensive research and polling... I still don't know what Dustie's gender is. I refer to him/her by either gender pronoun, mostly at random.”

Stasia: “My bunny is an it. And I can't remember if I gave him a name ever. I got him a super long time ago. BUT! I think I have just decided on a name, because I can. My rl bunny's name is Kiki... so my dust bunny will be Kiko.”

Cassie: “Umm...I never wondered about gender, I'm just happy to have my kitty/bunny. Besides, with the confusion my choice of name has certainly instilled in the poor kitty/bunny, I don't think my kitty/bunny needs to be limited by gender.”

Laithean: “Mine is named Brunn (Brown) I know... original”

Ismene: “I um... never really thought about it, actually.”

Adolla: “Yeah me either. Dustbunnies kinda just spawn.”

***
Brown-outs of the month

Riley Maconnar:

“Do Freudian slips count as Brown-Outs? I told my wife the other night that we needed to leave our waitress a big tit.”

Adolla Ceryia:

“The other day I tried to put the phone in the fridge and answer the milk.”

Lillian DeMeur:

“I was looking for a check out line to get into at the store last week, and spotted a magazine cover that looked nice.....well, before I knew it, I'd looked over every magazine, and had a lady get in the line I was standing by and say, "Did I just jump ahead of you?" The only thing I could think was, “you didn't move the magazine, so what are you talking about?””

Shala Miradsu:

“I had a cough last week that was keeping me from sleeping, so when I went to bed on Tuesday I took some NyQuil. Now, unfortunately, I did NOT have 8 hours to devote to sleep, so considering that I didn't go to bed until 3 AM, that was probably a bad idea. Staying awake through my first class was a tooth-and-nail struggle, so I decided I was going to use the ten minutes between it and my next class to have a quick nap. I scooted into the room, put my head against the wall and conked out. 8 minutes later I woke up, looked around...and realized I was in the wrong room.

Class hadn't actually started yet, so I just picked up my things and slipped out as quietly as I could.”
Brown Poll: New Year’s resolutions
The Brown poll this month: Do you make New Year’s resolutions?

The results show that the Browns are quite unanimous group of people… vast majority of us never make New Year’s resolutions!

I make several resolutions and also keep them 0% [0]
I make one resolution every year and keep it 5% [1]
I make several resolutions but I never manage to keep them 5% [1]
I make one resolution every year but never manage to keep it 5% [1]
I never make any resolutions on New Year 84% [16]

So, what do we say about the subject? First some examples of Browns who DON’T make resolutions:

Naomi: “I don't make resolutions on the New Year because I feel it would just be a way for me to feel more guilty the next year.”

Shara: “I don't see the point of making a resolution just to break it. Besides I'm happy with my life and don't have enough bad habits to try and break them.”

Stasia: “I don't make New Year's Resolutions. I figure everything else that needs resolving can occur at other times of the year.”

Miriya: “I never bother with them anymore. I tried as a kid, but I found it never worked anyway, so I tried enjoying New Year's without spending time thinking up something clever”

Serenla: “Nah, I never make them.”

Keara: “It's kind of like Lent (without the religious connotations of course). I always give the idea of making resolutions a little thought and then never commit to anything.”

Laithean: “I personally try to better myself all year round, not just one day a year. So I see no reason for a New Years Resolution.”

A few of us make resolutions on New Year:

Ismene: “I didn't see an option for "I make several resolutions and sometimes I keep them" [Editor’s note: Oops, my bad! Sorry!]. I'd say I keep about half of my resolutions. Usually. Um. Probably my most successful resolution I made several years ago which is to go to one culturally enriching event per month. And I still keep up with it!”

Cassie: “I make various resolutions, sometimes I keep them, often I don't. I rarely make the standard "lose weight, get fit, save money" resolutions, they are usually along the lines of "read more books than you buy."”

Official Brown-out of the month
By Madelaine Vitalia:

My husband and I went to put gas in the car. We have a tannish colored Chevy Lumina. We park the car at the pump and I notice that a nearby car is similar in color. I go in and pay for the gas. When I walk out again, I start walking towards what I *think* is my car... I was halfway there before my husband honked the horn and I realized I was walking towards the other tannish car.

I get in and he says "How in the heck could you mistake a Buick for a Chevy?!"

Brown Fun at D*Con
By: Ismene Sedai

Browns made quite a showing at D*Con this year!
Present and accounted for were Ismene Sedai, Sela Sedai, Cassie Sedai, Serenla Sedai, Adolla Sedai, Eniara Sedai, as well as various Accepted, including Muerandah, Shara, and Rinwyn. Warders Sean D and Wil were also at Dragon*Con. We all survived the Atlanta heat and had a terrific time getting to the numerous round-the-clock panels, parades and celebrity sightings at the convention.

The Browns had a rambunctiously random midnight gathering featuring rum, journals and good times. A hearty "thanks" to Muerandah for so generously providing us with a spot to gather. Congratulations to Sela for arranging the fabulous and much enjoyed "Eye of the World Intepretive Dance."

Did you miss out on D*Con this year?? Well, don't delay... tickets for next year's convention are already on sale.
What do you want to learn about the Brown Ajah?

PM your questions to Stasia Sedai or email them to brownajahbulletin@yahoo.com, and your question might just be the next to appear in the Brown Bulletin!
Brown Ajah at Europarty

By: Taika Vinh, Aspirant to the Brown Ajah

This summer’s Europarty (August 10-12 2007) was held in a small town called Driebergen (the Netherlands), which is less than one hour away from Amsterdam by train. More specifically the party was held in YMCA’s lodge some 1,5 kilometres away from the town.

The place was ideal for the party; there were dorms and showers/toilets for a rather large group and a big “dining hall” and kitchen and lots of outdoor space (with a place for campfire). The shabbiness and not-too-cleanliness was compensated by the low price and more importantly the wonderful people attending.

There were a bit less than 40 people from TV.net, and all ranks from citizens to senior members were represented. From the Ajahs, the Blues were the biggest, and only Gray was totally absent. Brown Ajah was represented by 2, Elyna Sedai, who did amazing job as organising and hosting the event with the help of Val Gaidin and also the Change family (Wen Sedai and her husband Cedric and their cute kids), and Keara Sedai, who came to the party as an aspiring Accepted but left as the newest Brown Aes Sedai.

I had a small interview with Elyna Sedai about organising the party:

Taika: What did your and Val Gaidin's job include in organising/hosting this year's Europarty?
Elyna: We arranged the location in Driebergen and did about half of the groceries. Wen and Cedric did the other half, I cannot thank them enough! Even half hardly fit in my car.
We made sure everyone who needed got directions and train timetables. As the assistant Treasurer, I also did all the financial work. I made breakfast both mornings (always with help from very nice people!) and opened the gate for guests going off and on most of the time (the location is fenced and the gate had to be closed all the time to prevent roaming youngsters from getting in). Val took care of explaining the house rules and we both made sure everything went well.

T: How was the job?
E: Easy at first, when we started looking for a location and found one. It was difficult to think of a menu and how many groceries we would need. I have no experience at all with buying for so many! On Friday night at the party, when two Brits missed their flight and one person seemed missing it got quite stressful. Especially because the highest ranking admin who would be there (Manora) was one of the two who missed the plane! I was actually afraid I had to do all the ceremonies myself. Luckily they got on the next flight and the last guest (Keara) turned up a little later than expected, but unharmed.

T: Have you been doing similar kinds of things many times before or was this the first?
E: I have hosted the first official Europarty ever, with the grand total of 5 people attending! I have also hosted a few small, unofficial parties, but never one as big as this Europarty.

T: If you've been to many other Tower rl events, how would you compare this Europarty to them?
E: Because I organised this one, I felt very "in control". That felt good. Europarties I have attended always seemed to be very relaxed, with some kind of program (ceremonies, dressing up and going somewhere on Saturday) but mostly with lots of "free" time to relax and get to know the other guests. This party wasn't very different. I liked it. I wonder if more alcohol goes around on Europarties or on US parties.. hmmmm *ponders and her thoughts drift away*

Keara Sedai’s real life raising ceremony was certainly a big event for the Browns too. Unfortunately she just moved to Hungary and hasn’t been around for some time. So I didn’t get to interview her about the wonderful ceremony. But judging by the look on her face when she was summoned she really didn’t expect it!

“I was completely surprised and it has been on of the highlights of my time in Europe,” said Keara. “Europarty, in itself, was amazing, and being raised in RL made my experience at my first RL party memorable. I never thought that I would be raised in RL, but I am so grateful and glad that it did occur that way. Being raised in RL makes being raised seem more real... well obviously. As for choosing Brown... I love all of the Ajahs here, and while Brown is a diverse group of women (not all a bunch of nerdy bookworms), I think I fit the description. I'm a book Brown as well as a site Brown. I love studying, I'm continuing grad school for history, I want to be a professor and of course always a student. The Browns on the site are a wonderful group of women, relaxed and welcoming and more importantly, intelligent and interesting. My choice became pretty clear as I got to know people on the site as a novice and even a citizen.”
Big news this month- congratulations to Rinwyn Sedai, who was also Raised to the Shawl!

The Browns are also extremely sad to announce that Ismene Sedai received the Director of Research position and has left her spot as the Ajah Head. But we are also extremely pleased to announce her replacement, Serenla Sedai! Also, Allin Sedai will be taking over Serenla’s place as Heart of the Ajah.

Congrats to you all!

Brown Poll

On a bit of a different note from the normal Brown Poll, the question now goes to you, the reader.
