If you ask 3 Browns that question, you'll get at least 4 answers. We're not sure how to summarize that essential part of ourselves that drew us to the Brown Ajah. The core value of the Brown Aes Sedai is her love of knowledge and learning. We have a desire to know more about the world around us than we did yesterday, and to share what we know with others. Ask a Brown about her passion, and you'll get more information than you ever dreamed was out there!

''Some Browns seek to study whatever catches their interest, others focus solely on trying to find knowledge that has been lost, from the Age of Legends, or later.'' (The Great Hunt)

The Browns here at TarValon.net are no strangers to study. Many of us continue our education both in universities and in personal research; each finding our own niche and interests. Many of the Browns enjoy writing as well as research, several are bilingual, and we all enjoy learning from not just books but the people around us as well.

The Brown Ajah is not only about the quest for knowledge. It is also filled with Sisters, Warders, and Aspirants that are compassionate, thoughtful, and caring. We seek to learn not only about the world and history but about each other too. We are a close knit group that is calm and mellow and there is very little drama among us, unless we are rallying against a book burning of course! Many of us are quiet, and even a little shy, while others are a bit more outgoing. No matter their personality the Brown Ajah is filled with members that are kind and sincere and truly care for one another.

The Brown Ajah also has its own personal quirks and traditions. We are known for our love of cheese as well as indulging now and again in the spirit of Rum. We each have our own dust bunny that helps us to keep our books tidy, and many of the Sisters have a tendency to “Brown Out” on occasion.

If there is anything you should wish to know about, be it specific to the Brown Ajah or anything else, seek out a Brown Sister, Warder, or Aspirant as they are always willing to share the knowledge they have.

== Brown Ajah ==

All visitors to the [[Brown Ajah (TarValon.net)|Brown]] forum are given a pet dust bunny to keep. They may name the dust bunny whatever they wish.

All Accepted in the Brown forum are given a comfy chair.

The Brown Ajah gifts each newly raised Sedai with a Brown Journal. Browns sign each other journals when they meet up at Real Life events.

== Gray Ajah ==

[[Gray Ajah (TarValon.net)|Grays]] like to hit each other in the face with pies at Real Life events.

Gray Aspirants are gifted with a baby animal upon Aspiring, chosen by her fellow Aspirants, and are called Graytlings.

Grays also have the Wheelbarrow, which is a very mysterious and powerful device. Its mystery is only exceeded by its power.

Spring was busy for the Brown Ajah but busy in real life rather than the boards. There was a lot of LoA's due to sickness, vacations and one instance of having a baby.

Though We did get a new Brown Aes Sedai, quite a few rants, and some drunken posting.

== Other Brown Ajah Happenings ==

 

Quite a few interesting things were brought to the Browns attention this spring. One being a very nice eye candy type blog. http://hotguysreadingbooks.tumblr.com/archive

Its nice because rather than models and celebrities posing with books this is real guys "in the wild" so to speak. A lot of it is reader submitted, so get your hot guys, a camera, and a book!

Though we have the first recorded "Brown Healing" to bring our spirits back up. Ismene Sedai posted this image of her and her sister.

I found her reading one of my books, so I hit her on the head and grabbed it back from her.

== Spring Brown Outs ==

 

"I don't know if this qualifies as a Brown-out or just cute, or whatever, but it needs sharing.

Anyway. My 6 year old came in my room this weekend and asked if she could have one of my little post-it flags. I asked why, and she said she needed it as a book mark. Of course, I said yes (OMG SHE WAS READING ON HER OWN), and gave her one. Later that day I happened to see the book she was reading, and I noticed she had written on the flag I'd given her. Curious, I picked it up to see what she had decided to write, thinking that it would probably say "Danae" or something. Nope, it said

HERE

in all capital letters. I'm not sure why, but I laughed at that for, I swear, a good 15 minutes. It's just so...I don't know...meta or something. Maybe she was afraid she'd forget what the book mark was for?"

"That reminds me of the first time I made cream puffs. I found the recipe in a cookbook and I thought they meant the little meringue cookies. They turned out great though I had no cream to fill them with. I just stared at them for awhile trying to figure out why I thought they'd be cookies."

"My mom posted on her Facebook today that she'd been meaning to put up a more "wintery" profile picture, but at this point she's going to wait for next winter.

I come by it honestly."

"I go to read outside, I got my sweater and hat on. Picked up my book and started to head to the back porch, only to realize that I picked up the remote instead of the book. Not sure how those two got mixed up."

"So, I went to the book store the other day because I saw that Patricia Briggs had a new hardback out. I thought "Yay, this means the last one should be in paperback. I shall go buy it!"

So I did. Got to the restaraunt, ordered lunch and started reading the book. "This seems strangely familiar...Oh! There was a preview in the end of the last book." Read a few pages more.

Came to the realization that I'd already bought the book and read it a few weeks ago."

"I tried to quote someone's post today at Adonalsium in one of the forums I Moderate...and hit "Edit" instead...(The buttons are right next to each other in Drupal.)

It wasn't until I posted "my" post, and saw someone else's avatar next to it that I realized I had actually Edited someone else's post..."

"I had a Brown Out to post here that I was thinking about last night, all evening.

I forgot what it was."

"I think this counts . . . at least it shows how clueless I can be.

I was at the optometrist getting fitted for new glasses and a nice guy walks in. We start talking he's very nice we have alot in common, talking about Germany, his work over in Munich my time there being transplants in Fort Wayne etc . . . he says if I'm over in Germany this year call him and we could travel a bit and he gives me his contact info I give him mine telling him to contact me if he wants to look around staying in Fort Wayne . . . I smile get in my car and Wait did I just pick up a guy????? (happily married but was holding my coat the whole conversation)

I am pretty sure I accidentally picked a guy up."

Who better than the Brown Ajah to help you navigate the ever growing world of electronic books. Each bulletin we come out with will have an article going over the best stuff we know about ebooks and ebook platforms. From were to get free or cheap ebooks to which ebook iphone app to use. If you have anything you want to add or want answered in eBrowns email aloren@tarvalon.net

Ebooks and reading devices have been around for awhile but until the kindle became more widespread the last couple of Christmases it was more of a niche. eReaders are great for those in school instead of packing large textbooks around and for traveling for the same reason. Many like having a whole library at their fingertips and with certain readers a whole bookstore pretty much anywhere you are instantly.

You can get a dedicated reading device like the [http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reader-3G-Wifi-Graphite/dp/B002FQJT3Q| Kindle] or the [http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/index.asp| Nook]. Or you can get a iPad or the android version the [http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/01/samsung-galaxy-tab-review/| Galaxy Tab]if you want your reader to do more than books only.

Another option to look into is using your phone as a reader. iPhone(iPod touches) have the same access to the retailers Amazon and Barnes & Noble as the Nook and Kindle. I know many other smart phones also have the ability to be readers. I myself use my iPod touch as a reader and its perfect for me. Hand held and small and can be used for so many other things as well as a reader. I will go further into the various apps in the apple app store in another edition. (though just so you know my personal favorite is stanza)

It all depends on your taste what your going to be using your reader for and of course how much money your willing to part with for it!

If your wanting something for school I would say go for the dedicated device. If your a casual novel reader who wants to do other things (like twitter, facebook, video, games) I say go for a smart phone, iPad, or iPod touch. (or the android versions if your not a apple fan)

Not ready to go for a gadget but still want to read eBooks? Kindle and Nook have desktop versions for your computer. Microsoft also has a reader with "clear type" which is supposed to be easier to read. There are other freeware software options for computer reading I have seen but I am looking further into it and will be writing another issue going more in depth when I find the best options for you.

Ah summer...

While most people may think fun in the sun, a Browns first thought is probably about summer reading!

Though the Browns did end up getting some sun on Sunday one of Tarvalon.nets high feasts and got a sunburn for their trouble.

The conclusion is most Browns don't belong in the sun. We'll stick to the nice cool dim library thank you very much.

It came to our attention that we had not heard from Ferdinand the Brown Ajah's traveling Dust bunny in some time. He was happily being hosted by the lovely Taika's Sedai though! Caribbean Sunset

A Caribbean Sunset is a tropical drink made with rum, melon liqueur, cranberry juice, and orange juice. A Caribbean Sunset is similar to a Tequila Sunset, in that the orange juice is floated on top of the cranberry juice.

Caribbean Sunset Ingredients

3/4 ounce Malibu rum

3/4 ounce Melon liqueur

2 ounce Cranberry juice

Orange juice

Ah summer...

While most people may think fun in the sun, a Browns first thought is probably about summer reading!

Though the Browns did end up getting some sun on Sunday one of Tarvalon.nets high feasts and got a sunburn for their trouble.

There has been alot of goings on in brown these past couple of months. So keep reading to be clued in on some of it.

==Brown Ajah News and Things==

===Time for congratulations!===

*Congratulations to Cariyad, Who was raised to Aes Sedai this September. Welcome sister! 

*Also to Elandria who as aspired to the Brown Ajah. Apparently we stole her during Dragon Con. 

*This month also has seen a change in Head of Ajah. Thank you Cassie for being and fantastic HoA and congrats and welcome to Adolla as the new HoA! 

*Rinwywn became the new Heart and Aloren the Mind. 

We had two bondings as well.

Rinwyn and Amarande bonded at D*con this year and here are pictures. Congrats you two may your bond last and bring you much joy.

Well we have been quite busy editing our wiki headquarters and so we also updated the brown description.

"Several of the Sisters of the Brown Ajah decided it was time to show their warders just how much they love them. Here are some of our poems about our beloved warders."

I wonder if this was to show love or to embarrass / annoy said warders. =P

===Shaoman Theme===

This year the Browns had alot of fun with the theme.

We went as a cat heard .. You know the saying 'Like herding a bunch of cats.' referring to a difficult task. Well The idea for using this our shaoman theme came from a quote from Cassie to Adolla about talking over the Brown Ajah.

"Condolences Doll! It's your cat herd now!"

It became an ajah joke so it being the theme was quite amusing. Here is a commercial that the theme was partly based off of.

I joined Brown as an Accepted (before guesting) back in late 2005 I think. I was raised to Aes Sedai in Brown at D*Con 2006.

The first position I held in Brown was Sitter. I took over mid-term for Sela around the time of Anni 2007.

'''What made you decide to serve as HoA?''' 
I had served as Sitter twice, was Heart for Serenla twice, and so when she took the job as Director of Membership, it just seemed natural for me to apply for the job as Head. It didn't hurt that I like being in leadership roles.

'''How was being HoA for you, Do you plan to serve again at a later date?''' 
What do you think you brought to the ajah, how do you feel you affected it for the better? I loved being HoA! The best part was being able to help the Aspirants work toward Senior Membership. If I ever give up my job as Mistress of Revels (also fun when it's not stressing me out) I would more than likely apply to be Head again at some point. It really is a fabulous job to have.

What brought me to the Brown Ajah was meeting Browns in real life. I don't know if I would have actually chosen Brown if I hadn't met Naomi at my first D*Con. And I'm sure I wouldn't have remained if I'd not met several other Browns at 5th Anni. I don't know that being part of the Browns has really changed me any. It's given me a ton of friends, but I'm still the same person I was before I joined the site. I think that's what I love about the Ajah, there is no adaptation needed.

It's been fun so far. Just sorta getting into the swing of things figuring out what I need to do. No big surprises yet.

Well I would hope the ajah stays mostly the same. We may not be the most active ajah but we have a dynamic that works for us. 
I mostly want to make sure it keeps working and that we raise people who find us and fit into that dynamic.

Elandria - I've been doing it as long as I can remember.. The first time I can pinpoint was during 6th grade though. Before that.. I can't promise anything.

Aloren - Yeah I read while walking when I am at home... I do that quite well as I know were everything is. (unless I step on a stray toy =P) In school I used to walk and read but I would run into things and people.

Cassie - I don't read while walking often, but I've never had a problem managing it. I have excellent periphery vision so I can read and still see where I'm going.

Ismene - I can read and walk beautifully. It horrifies my husband. *snickers*

==Brown Book Review==

Dune, House Atreides by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the most acclaimed and classic Sci-fi series of all time. When I read these years ago I enjoyed them greatly and until recently, unaware of the books written by his son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. So while I was looking for something to read in our house I came across copies of the prequels of Dune. I started Dune, House Atreides hoping that it had the same feel and writing style as the original series. I was not disappointed.

The book as well as the two after spans the generation before the first of the original Dune series. We come across familiar characters at a earlier point in time and with more depth into the events leading up to the original books. Herbert's son does a wonderful job at capturing the depth and complexity of the original series, including the insightful quotes at the top of every chapter from historical figures in the Dune world.

Anyone who was a fan of Dune will enjoy the return to the Dune world and new readers could pick these up and then move on to the original series with some ease. I wish I had found them earlier and look forward to reading the rest of the Dune books Frank Herbert's son has authored.

(sorry this review was a little short but I will try for a more in depth review next month)

Well I would hope the ajah stays mostly the same. We may not be the most active ajah but we have a dynamic that works for us. 
I mostly want to make sure it keeps working and that we raise people who find us and fit into that dynamic.

Elandria - I've been doing it as long as I can remember.. The first time I can pinpoint was during 6th grade though. Before that.. I can't promise anything.

Aloren - Yeah I read while walking when I am at home... I do that quite well as I know were everything is. (unless I step on a stray toy =P) In school I used to walk and read but I would run into things and people.

Cassie - I don't read while walking often, but I've never had a problem managing it. I have excellent periphery vision so I can read and still see where I'm going.

Ismene - I can read and walk beautifully. It horrifies my husband. *snickers*

Darim - I wouldn't even try!

Dune, House Atreides by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the most acclaimed and classic Sci-fi series of all time. When I read these years ago I enjoyed them greatly and until recently unaware of the books written by his son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

So while I was looking for something to read in our house I came across copies of the prequels of Dune. I started Dune, House Atreides hoping that it had the same feel and writing style as the original series. I was not disappointed.

The book as well as the two after spans the generation before the first of the original Dune series. We come across familiar characters at a earlier point in time and with more depth into the events leading up to the original books.
Herbert's son does a wonderful job at capturing the depth and complexity of the original series, including the insightful quotes at the top of every chapter from historical figures in the Dune world.

Anyone who was a fan of Dune will enjoy the return to the Dune world and new readers could pick these up and then move on to the original series with some ease. I wish I had found them earlier and look forward to reading the rest of the Dune books Frank Herbert's son has authored.

(sorry this review was a little short but I will try for a more in depth review next month)

===Time for congratulations!===

*Congratulations to Cariyad, Who was raised to Aes Sedai this September. Welcome sister! 

*Also to Elandria who as aspired to the Brown Ajah. Apparently we stole her during Dragon Con. 

*This month also has seen a change in Head of Ajah. Thank you Cassie for being and fantastic HoA and congrats and welcome to Adolla as the new HoA! 

*Rinwywn became the new Heart and Aloren the Mind. 

We had two bondings as well.

Rinwyn and Amarande bonded at D*con this year and here are pictures. Congrats you two may your bond last and bring you much joy.

===Shaoman Theme===

This year the Browns had alot of fun with the theme.

We went as a cat heard .. You know the saying 'Like herding a bunch of cats.' referring to a difficult task. Well The idea for using this our shaoman theme came from a quote from Cassie to Adolla about talking over the Brown Ajah.

"Condolences Doll! It's your cat herd now!"

It became an ajah joke so it being the theme was quite amusing. Here is a commercial that the theme was partly based off of.

I had served as Sitter twice, was Heart for Serenla twice, and so when she took the job as Director of Membership, it just seemed natural for me to apply for the job as Head. It didn't hurt that I like being in leadership roles.

What do you think you brought to the ajah, how do you feel you affected it for the better? I loved being HoA! The best part was being able to help the Aspirants work toward Senior Membership. If I ever give up my job as Mistress of Revels (also fun when it's not stressing me out) I would more than likely apply to be Head again at some point. It really is a fabulous job to have.

What brought me to the Brown Ajah was meeting Browns in real life. I don't know if I would have actually chosen Brown if I hadn't met Naomi at my first D*Con. And I'm sure I wouldn't have remained if I'd not met several other Browns at 5th Anni. I don't know that being part of the Browns has really changed me any. It's given me a ton of friends, but I'm still the same person I was before I joined the site. I think that's what I love about the Ajah, there is no adaptation needed.

I wonder if this was to show love or to embarrass / annoy said warders. =P

===Shaoman Theme===

This year the Browns had alot of fun with the theme.

We went as a cat heard .. You know the saying 'Like herding a bunch of cats.' referring to a difficult task. Well The idea for using this our shaoman theme came from a quote from Cassie to Adolla about talking over the Brown Ajah.

"Condolences Doll! It's your cat herd now!"

It became an ajah joke so it being the theme was quite amusing. Here is a commercial that the theme was partly based off of.

Since we are covering two months in this issue we are having two memebers for Member of the Month. 
Cassie and Adolla Sedai, to say thank you to the old HoA and celebrate the instalment of a new HoA.

The first position I held in Brown was Sitter. I took over mid-term for Sela around the time of Anni 2007.

I had served as Sitter twice, was Heart for Serenla twice, and so when she took the job as Director of Membership, it just seemed natural for me to apply for the job as Head. It didn't hurt that I like being in leadership roles.

What do you think you brought to the ajah, how do you feel you affected it for the better? I loved being HoA! The best part was being able to help the Aspirants work toward Senior Membership. If I ever give up my job as Mistress of Revels (also fun when it's not stressing me out) I would more than likely apply to be Head again at some point. It really is a fabulous job to have.

What brought me to the Brown Ajah was meeting Browns in real life. I don't know if I would have actually chosen Brown if I hadn't met Naomi at my first D*Con. And I'm sure I wouldn't have remained if I'd not met several other Browns at 5th Anni. I don't know that being part of the Browns has really changed me any. It's given me a ton of friends, but I'm still the same person I was before I joined the site. I think that's what I love about the Ajah, there is no adaptation needed.

It's been fun so far. Just sorta getting into the swing of things figuring out what I need to do. No big surprises yet.

Well I would hope the ajah stays mostly the same. We may not be the most active ajah but we have a dynamic that works for us. 
I mostly want to make sure it keeps working and that we raise people who find us and fit into that dynamic.

Elandria - I've been doing it as long as I can remember.. The first time I can pinpoint was during 6th grade though. Before that.. I can't promise anything.

Aloren - Yeah I read while walking when I am at home... I do that quite well as I know were everything is. (unless I step on a stray toy =P) In school I used to walk and read but I would run into things and people.

Cassie - I don't read while walking often, but I've never had a problem managing it. I have excellent periphery vision so I can read and still see where I'm going.

Ismene - I can read and walk beautifully. It horrifies my husband. *snickers*

Darim - I wouldn't even try!

Dune, House Atreides by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the most acclaimed and classic Sci-fi series of all time. When I read these years ago I enjoyed them greatly and until recently unaware of the books written by his son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. So while I was looking for something to read in our house I came across copies of the prequels of Dune. I started Dune, House Atreides hoping that it had the same feel and writing style as the original series. I was not disappointed. The book as well as the two after spans the generation before the first of the original Dune series. We come across familiar characters at a earlier point in time and with more depth into the events leading up to the original books. Herbert's son does a wonderful job at capturing the depth and complexity of the original series, including the insightful quotes at the top of every chapter from historical figures in the Dune world.
Anyone who was a fan of Dune will enjoy the return to the Dune world and new readers could pick these up and then move on to the original series with some ease. I wish I had found them earlier and look forward to reading the rest of the Dune books Frank Herbert's son has authored.

(sorry this review was a little short but I will try for a more in depth review next month)

I had served as Sitter twice, was Heart for Serenla twice, and so when she took the job as Director of Membership, it just seemed natural for me to apply for the job as Head. It didn't hurt that I like being in leadership roles.

What do you think you brought to the ajah, how do you feel you affected it for the better? I loved being HoA! The best part was being able to help the Aspirants work toward Senior Membership. If I ever give up my job as Mistress of Revels (also fun when it's not stressing me out) I would more than likely apply to be Head again at some point. It really is a fabulous job to have.

What brought me to the Brown Ajah was meeting Browns in real life. I don't know if I would have actually chosen Brown if I hadn't met Naomi at my first D*Con. And I'm sure I wouldn't have remained if I'd not met several other Browns at 5th Anni. I don't know that being part of the Browns has really changed me any. It's given me a ton of friends, but I'm still the same person I was before I joined the site. I think that's what I love about the Ajah, there is no adaptation needed.

It's been fun so far. Just sorta getting into the swing of things figuring out what I need to do. No big surprises yet.

Well I would hope the ajah stays mostly the same. We may not be the most active ajah but we have a dynamic that works for us. 
I mostly want to make sure it keeps working and that we raise people who find us and fit into that dynamic.

Elandria - I've been doing it as long as I can remember.. The first time I can pinpoint was during 6th grade though. Before that.. I can't promise anything.

Aloren - Yeah I read while walking when I am at home... I do that quite well as I know were everything is. (unless I step on a stray toy =P) In school I used to walk and read but I would run into things and people.

Cassie - I don't read while walking often, but I've never had a problem managing it. I have excellent periphery vision so I can read and still see where I'm going.

Ismene - I can read and walk beautifully. It horrifies my husband. *snickers*

Darim - I wouldn't even try!

Dune, House Atreides by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the most acclaimed and classic Sci-fi series of all time. When I read these years ago I enjoyed them greatly and until recently unaware of the books written by his son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. So while I was looking for something to read in our house I came across copies of the prequels of Dune. I started Dune, House Atreides hoping that it had the same feel and writing style as the original series. I was not disappointed. The book as well as the two after spans the generation before the first of the original Dune series. We come across familiar characters at a earlier point in time and with more depth into the events leading up to the original books. Herbert's son does a wonderful job at capturing the depth and complexity of the original series, including the insightful quotes at the top of every chapter from historical figures in the Dune world.
Anyone who was a fan of Dune will enjoy the return to the Dune world and new readers could pick these up and then move on to the original series with some ease. I wish I had found them earlier and look forward to reading the rest of the Dune books Frank Herbert's son has authored.

(sorry this review was a little short but I will try for a more in depth review next month)

==Brown Ajah News and Things==

===Time for congratulations!===

*Congratulations to Cariyad, Who was raised to Aes Sedai this September. Welcome sister! 
*Also to Elandria who as aspired to the Brown Ajah. Apparently we stole her during Dragon Con. 
*This month also has seen a change in Head of Ajah. Thank you Cassie for being and fantastic HoA and congrats and welcome to Adolla as the new HoA! 
*Rinwywn became the new Heart and Aloren the Mind. 

We had two bondings as well.

Rinwyn and Amarande bonded at D*con this year and here are pictures. Congrats you two may your bond last and bring you much joy.

===Shaoman Theme===

This year the Browns had alot of fun with the theme.

We went as a cat heard .. You know the saying 'Like herding a bunch of cats.' referring to a difficult task. Well The idea for using this our shaoman theme came from a quote from Cassie to Adolla about talking over the Brown Ajah.

"Condolences Doll! It's your cat herd now!"

It became an ajah joke so it being the theme was quite amusing. Here is a commercial that the theme was partly based off of.
