==General==

The Tuatha'an, commonly called the Tinkers or the Traveling people, are a group of itinerant wanders, living in wagons, small houses on wheels, tall wooden boxes laquered and painted in bright colours, reds and blues and yellows and greens among other hues . Each band is led by a man titled ''Mahdi'', meaning seeker in the Old Tongue ({{teotw|25}}). Though there are many bands, they do see themselves as part of a whole ({{tsr|45}}). They follow a pacifist way of life, moving from place to place, avoiding anything larger than a small village, never staying long in any one place , seeking the song, which they believe will bring back the lost days of peace. Though they do not know what the song is, they believe they will recognise it when they hear it ({{teotw|25}}).

By the time of Winter's Heart, they are heading to [[Seanchan]] held territory as they believe there is safety there and equal justice for all ({{kod|8}}).

==History==

In [[the Age of Legends]], the [[Aiel]], known then as the Da'shain Aiel, served the [[Aes Sedai]] and followed the Way of the Leaf ({{tsr|26}}). Amongst their duties was seedsinging, performed with [[Ogier]] and Nym, where together they would sing to cause seeds to sprout and grow into plants twice as high as normal that were never touched by pest or pathogen ({{tsr|26}}).

The Tuatha'an split from the Aiel during [[the Breaking]]. The leader of the breakaway group initially let his hair grow out from the Aiel style. The time is not clear, but [[Sulwin]] claims that "My grandfather used to tell me stories he heard as a boy, stories of when we lived in safety and people came to hear us sing." He takes a group of discontented Aiel away to find a safe place and the songs that they used to sing ({{tsr|25}}). By this time, much of their history had been lost, save that they once served the Aes Sedai, and it is likely that the song they sought was merely a partial remembrance of Seedsinging.

Possibly as a result of this, they are one of the few groups allowed to cross [[the Aiel Waste]] unmolested. Indeed, Aiel avoid all contact with them, finding the idea of speaking to them to be distasteful ({{Teotw|25}}; {{tsr|41}}). During the years since the split, the Tuatha'an have lost all memory of their origins; only the Way of the Leaf and the search for the Song remain.

==Appearance==

The Tuatha'an are known for their brightly coloured clothes, which are often not color co-ordinated. Their clothes are even more colorful than their wagons – [[Perrin]] thinks that they seem to be chosen at random, and the combinations hurts his eyes ({{teotw|25}}). Physically, they are not described as having any specific distinguishing traits.

Examples of Tuatha’an clothing include:

* A bright blue, high-collared coat and baggy trousers of a green that almost seems to glow, tucked into kneeboots ({{tsr|41}}).

* [[Ila]] in a green skirt and blue blouse ({{tsr|42}}).

* [[Raen]] in a bright green coat but trousers redder than any Perrin had seen before (TSR Ch 42).

==The Way of the Leaf==

The Tuatha'an follow a totally pacifistic way of life. They will not attack others, or use violence to defend themselves. If attacked, they will ask why the person is trying to harm them, or run away, believing there is never any good reason to harm another, and that by denying someone the chance to hurt them, they are helping the other person.

"The leaf lives to its appointed time and does not struggle against the wind that carries it away. The leaf does no harm and finally falls to nourish new leaves. So it should be with all men. And women." ([[Aram]]; {{teotw|25}})

Occasionally, one of the Tuatha'an will not be able to live according to the Way. These people, who the others call "the lost," go and live in the cities. Conversely, they do add to their numbers from people who find their way of life appealing ({{teotw|25}}) and have taken in some of the Aiel who felt that they should not have abandoned the Way of the Leaf ({{tfoh|5}}).

==Culture==

Aside from their pacifism, the Tuatha'an exhibit an exuberance and joy that is uncommon. All the people seem to be on the point of dancing, even when standing still, even during the rare times when there was no music in the camp. Fiddles, flutes, dulcimers, zithers and drums spin harmony and counterpoint around the wagons at almost any hour, in camp or on the move; if someone is awake in the camp, there is usually music ({{teotw|27}}).

The Tuatha'an keep mastiffs, large as wolves and even heavier. However, these are for show only and if challenged will back down ({{teotw|25}}).

They do not have a channeling case and if they ever find any girl among them with the ability to channel, they immediately set off for [[Tar Valon]] to deliver her ({{ns|3}}).

Their craftsmanship is superb, usually mending items better than new (TWoRJTWoT); for example [[Alsbet Luhhan]] once claimed that a pot they mended was better than new ({{teotw|25}}).

As they do not believe in harming others, it seems likely they are vegetarians. They do serve a thick vegetable stew ({{teotw|25}}).

==The Tiganza==

The Tuatha'an have a dance that is considered very alluring, the ''tiganza''.

“A girl in a red dress swayed into the light, loosening her shawl. Strings of beads hung in her hair and she had kicked off her shoes. A flute began the melody, wailing softly and the girl danced. Outstretched arms spread the shawl behind her; her hips undulated as her bare feet shuffled to the beat of the drums.” (Perrin; {{teotw|27}}).

It is not, however, considered the equal of the ''sa'sara'' ({{tsr|42}}).

==Reputation==

The Tinkers have a reputation as thieves ({{teotw|25}}; {{tsr|45}}; {{kod|4}}). [[Egwene]] comments to [[Elyas]] and Perrin that “the [[Taren Ferry]] folk are as great thieves as the Tinkers. They'd no doubt end up stealing each other blind” ({{teotw|25}}). This view may also be seen in the song "The Tinker has my pots" ({{teotw|27}}), though the Tinkers themselves know the tune as “Toss my feathers.” They also feature in the song “Tinker in the Kitchen” ({{teotw|32}}).

This is largely undeserved. Elyas tells Perrin that "The tinkers make me sick sometimes, but they don't steal any more than most folks" ({{teotw|25}}).

They also have a reputation for stealing children, and though this is also untrue, often children are enticed away by their ways. For this reason, large towns and villages will not allow the Tuatha'an to camp near them, not that they would wish to do so anyway ({{teotw|25}}).

Many also consider them cowards, due to their willingness to run away at the first sign of danger, but others disagree, noting that it can take courage to go into danger unarmed as [[Leya]] does ({{tdr|1}}; {{kod|4}}).

It also seems that they will go out of their way and expose themselves to personal risk if they see that someone else in danger. In the battle of the [[Two Rivers]], the band staying there took young children from [[Emond's Field]], ready to try and take them to safety if the village fell ({{tsr|56}}). Similarly, when they thought [[Selucia]] and [[Tuon]] might have been in danger from [[Mat]], they followed the three until they could be sure this wasn't the case ({{kod|4}}).

==General==

The Dark One’s greatest need during the War of the Shadow was for soldiers. Before the war started, his scientists (including [[Aginor]]) combined living human and animal genetic material to create warriors that were powerful, fierce, fast, hard to kill and intelligent enough to fight well and take orders. They used naturally aggressive animals like boars, bears, wolves, goats, wildcats, rams and eagles in combination with humans to make Trollocs (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

They are stronger than the animals and humans from which they were created and can run almost as fast as a horse (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

Trollocs are vicious by nature and kill for the pure pleasure of doing so (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

Trollocs were initially a failed experiment as they lacked the self-discipline and drive to be efficient soldiers. They have the instincts and drives of animals, the worst human characteristics and very limited intelligence. They can perform only comparatively simple tasks; they are deceitful and unstable by nature. They are usually unwilling or unable to follow orders unless driven by fear. If Trollocs are more afraid of the foe than their commander, they will turn and run. The unexpected appearance of the [[Myrddraal]], Trolloc throwback offspring, solved this problem (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

Trollocs are omnivorous but prefer meat. They will eat animals, humans and even other Trollocs (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7). During the War of Power, [[Balthamel]] set up camps to breed humans as fodder for the Trollocs; Sammael often fed prisoners of war to Trollocs and [[Asmodean]] had “harvesters” that made people available for rations to Trolloc garrisons (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 5). [[Demandred]] is reported to have captured two entire cities and fed every person in it to the Trollocs just because he believed the people had slighted him in his former life (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 5). During the War of Power, Darkfriends who forswore their oath to the Dark One were fed to the Trollocs (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 6).

Trollocs live in the Blight. They have been wiped out in [[Seanchan]] since the millennium after the Breaking (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 15).

Trollocs are prolific breeders (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 5). Female Trollocs enjoy being pregnant. A human and a Trolloc could mate but even if the human mother survives to give birth, the resulting Trolloc offspring is usually stillborn and those who are born alive do not survive long (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

Trollocs have their own language; they have a vile and violent sense of humor (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7; TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 20). Trollocs are given names ([[The Eye of the World: Chapter 5|TEotW, Ch. 5]]).

Trollocs demonstrate their individuality through tattoos, carved bone adornments and their hairstyle (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

Trollocs call the Aiel Waste ''Djevik K’Shar'' or “the Dying Ground” (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 20). They will not enter stedding unless driven to do so (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 21). They do not like wolves ([[The Eye of the World: Chapter 10|TEotW, Ch. 10]]). Trollocs hate deep water. They cannot swim and they will not even wade in water that is waist-deep ([[The Eye of the World: Chapter 19|TEotW, Ch. 19]]).

Warders and [[Aes Sedai]] can sense the presence of Trollocs ([[The Eye of the World: Chapter 9|TEotW, Ch. 9]]).

==Organizations==

Trollocs are divided into twelve principal, tribelike bands. They are the only known Shadowspawn to have formed a social structure and tribal system (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

The twelve principal tribes are: Ahf’frait, Al’ghol, Bhansheen, Dhjin’nen, Ghar’ghael, Ghob’lin, Gho’hlem, Ghraem’lan, Ko’bal (their sigil is a blood red enameled trident), Kno’mon, Dha’vol ([[Lan]] calls them the worst kind) and Dhai’mon (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7; [[The Eye of the World: Chapter 7|TEotW, Ch. 7]]; [[The Eye of the World: Chapter 9|TEotW, Ch. 9]]).

There are also lesser tribes. Some of their sigils include a staring eye, a dagger-pierced hand and a man shape wrapped in flames ([[Knife of Dreams: Chapter 19|KoD, Ch. 19]]).

Only male Trollocs fight and hunt. Females are cloistered, serving as breeding machines for the males (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

==Appearance==

Each Trolloc has the face and characteristics of the particular animal that his human genetic material was combined with (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

Trollocs are eight to ten feet tall and have the body of an overlarge, extremely muscular man (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

They are towering, coarse-haired bulky forms. They have intelligent, human eyes and faces that often bear horns, tusks, bestial muzzles full of gnashing teeth, or sharp beaks. Some have the hind legs of the animal they resemble, with hooves or claws in place of feet. Almost all have human-like hands with thick, heavy nails (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

Trollocs make their own weapons and armor; they appear crude and unfinished but are still deadly. They wear no helmets because of the difficulty in crafting adequate protection for the wide variety of faces that Trollocs have (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7). Some Trolloc weapons pick up a taint from Thakan’dar, a valley on the slopes of [[Shayol Ghul]] where their weapons are made; this taint can cause deadly sickness beyond the normal wound from the weapon The Eye of the World: Chapter 8|TEotW, Ch. 8]]).

==Uses, Purposes, Talents==

Trollocs are used as foot soldiers. They are organized into fists of one to two hundred Trollocs and are placed under the command of a Myrddraal (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

Myrddraal can link minds with Trollocs, completely overriding their bestial nature. If a Myrddraal dies while linked, the Trollocs linked with it die as well (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

Trollocs generally fight with spears and hook-tipped axes. They almost never use projectile weapons although there are some Trolloc archers whose bows fire arrows roughly the diameter of a large man’s thumb (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 10).

Trolloc raids are sometimes used as a distraction for a [[Draghkar]] slipping into an area to assassinate someone (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 7).

Trollocs see well in the dark but bright light will blind them. Some can track by scent or sound (some hear better than dogs), but they are lazy and give up easily The Eye of the World: Chapter 5|TEotW, Ch. 5]]).

During the Trolloc Wars, human armies had to develop special tactics to fight the Trollocs. They had to strike at the Trollocs’ weak points: their animalistic natures and inability to reason in tight situations. After long harassing action by cavalry, human infantry took up a defensive position, holding it long enough for mounted archers to move in from the sides and whittle the Trolloc numbers down safely from a distance. Those Trollocs not destroyed in the “pincer” broke and ran (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 10).

==Timeline of Known Trolloc Activities==

*Trollocs are created by Aginor before the beginning of the [[War of Power]] (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 5).

*Trolloc armies are used during the War of Power; after the strike at Shayol Ghul, the organization of the Shadow weakens and often the Trolloc armies would fight each other. They still wreaked havoc on humanity; it was only the Breaking that brought their destructive force to an end as even the Trollocs had to focus on surviving the male Aes Sedai going mad. The Trollocs retreated to the Blight (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 8, 10).

*About 1000 AB, Trollocs come out of the Blight in large numbers, shattering the Compact of Ten Nations. The Trolloc Wars lasted about 350 years and spread destruction across the continent, as far south as [[Illian]] and [[Tear]] (although Tear never fell), due in large part to their massive numbers. Trollocs attempt to take [[Tar Valon]], unsuccessfully, on four separate occasions; during this time, it is said that the extra Warders bonded by the [[Green Ajah]] made a positive difference in the battles. There is no known reason for the sudden attacks, although [[Ishamael]] may have been responsible (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 5, 9, 10, 24).

*Trollocs moved against [[Manetheren]]; the forces of King Aemon held them off for ten days while awaiting reinforcements that never came. Queen Eldrene knew when Aemon died and she lashed out with the True Source and supposedly sent balefire to consume the Trollocs where they stood (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 10).

*Trollocs camped in the ruined city of [[Shadar Logoth|Aridhol]]. [[Mashadar]] consumed the entire army and no Trolloc has willingly set foot in Aridhol/Shadar Logoth since (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 10).

*The Trolloc forces were finally defeated at the Battle of Maighande; this turned the tide of the Trolloc Wars and the creatures were eventually pushed back into the Blight (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 10).

*Trolloc activity continues in the Blight, including a brief but violent upswing around FY 943, during the reign of [[Artur Hawkwing]] (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 11). Trollocs struck hard into Hawkwing’s northern provinces in FY 986 at three points but Hawkwing crushed them in a series of seven major battles, culminating at Talidar in FY 987, so decisively that Trolloc activity along the Blight diminished for fifty years (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 12).

*The Border Nations continue to skirmish with Trollocs during the ensuing years (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 14). The nation of [[Malkier]] is overrun by Trollocs in the autumn of 955 NE (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 13).

*Trollocs are seen outside of the Borderlands for the first time since the Trolloc Wars in [[Emond's Field]], [[Andor]] during the year of 998 NE (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 14). Trollocs attack the al’Thor farm, although [[Rand]] and [[Tam]] both escape ([[The Eye of the World: Chapter 5|TEotW, Ch. 5]]).

*A Trolloc named [[Narg]] (the only named Trolloc we’ve seen in the series) waits for Rand to return to the farmhouse so he can capture him and hold him for a Myrddraal that wants to talk to Rand. Rand accidentally kills him with his father’s sword ([[The Eye of the World: Chapter 5|TEotW, Ch. 5]]; [[The Eye of the World: Chapter 6|TEotW, Ch. 6]]).

*Seven different bands of Trollocs attack Emond’s Field the same night; that many have not acted together since the Trolloc Wars ([[The Eye of the World: Chapter 7|TEotW, Ch. 7]]).

*Trollocs chase Rand, [[Mat]], [[Perrin]], [[Egwene]], [[Nynaeve]], [[Thom]], Lan and [[Moiraine]] as they leave [[Baerlon]]. The group tries to hide from them in Shadar Logoth, but the Trollocs are forced into the city by the Myrddraal so the group must flee once again. During the flight from Shadar Logoth, the group is separated ([[The Eye of the World: Chapter 19|TEotW, Ch. 19]]).

*Trollocs attack [[Fal Dara]] to capture the [[Horn of Valere]] and help free [[Padan Fain]]. [[Ingtar]] lets them in ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 9|TGH, Ch. 9]]; Tor Q&A).

*Ingtar, Rand, Perrin and others chase the Trollocs who stole the Horn of Valere. Fain lets the Trollocs slaughter entire villages that they capture and/or eat them ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 10|TGH, Ch. 10]]; [[The Great Hunt: Chapter 11|TGH, Ch. 11]]).

*Rand and [[Loial]] sneak into the Trolloc camp and steal back the Horn of Valere; they kill several Trollocs in the process ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 19|TGH, Ch. 19]]).

*Trollocs attack Rand and Loial in [[Cairhien]] and chase them to the Illuminators chapter house; Loial manages to kill a Trolloc ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 27|TGH, Ch. 27]]).

*Trollocs attack the camp of the Dragon Reborn in the Mountains of Mist ([[The Dragon Reborn: Chapter 5|TDR, Ch. 5]]).

*[[Sammael]] sends an army of Trollocs to invade the Stone of Tear; [[Semirhage]], on orders of the Dark One, sends an opposing army of Trollocs. Rand uses the One Power to destroy the Trollocs ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 10|TSR, Ch. 10]]; [[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 13|TSR, Ch. 13]]; [[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 14|TSR, Ch. 14]]; [[Lord of Chaos: Chapter 6|LoC: 6]]).

*Trollocs attack Perrin, Loial, [[Faile]] and the others as they use the Ways to travel to Emond’s Field ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 27|TSR, Ch. 27]]).

*The Two Rivers is under attack by Trollocs; the Trollocs have killed Perrin’s entire family. Perrin locks the Waygate in Emond’s Field to prevent more Trollocs from arriving ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 29|TSR, Ch. 29]]; [[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 30|TSR, Ch. 30]]).

*Trollocs attack Rand and the [[Aiel]] when they camp at [[Imre Stand]] ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 37|TSR, Ch. 37]]).

*Perrin and other [[Two Rivers]] men hunt Trollocs; their hunt ends when they are ambushed and badly defeated ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 40|TSR, Ch. 40]]).

*Five hundred Trollocs attack Emond’s Field to test the village’s defense; they also attack the Tinkers who are camped nearby, almost completely destroying them ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 44|TSR, Ch. 44]]; [[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 45|TSR, Ch. 45]]).

*Trollocs again attack Rand and the Aiel, this time at [[Cold Rocks Hold]] ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 50|TSR, Ch. 50]]).

*Trolloc attacks continue against Emond’s Field. The Trollocs eventually mount a full-scale final assault, but the forces of Emond’s Field, with the help of [[Deven Ride]] and [[Watch Hill]], manage to turn them back ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 53|TSR, Ch. 53]]; [[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 56|TSR, Ch. 56]]).

*Trollocs attack Rand and the Aiel at [[Jangai Pass]] in a diversion attempt so that two Draghkar can assassinate Rand ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 22|TFoH, Ch. 22]]).

*When Rand arrives in [[Caemlyn]], there are hordes of Trollocs waiting in the Palace and surrounding the city. The Aiel fight the Trollocs while Rand takes care of [[Rahvin]]. Once Rahvin is killed, Rand helps the Aiel successfully fight off the Trollocs ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 54|TFoH, Ch. 54]]; [[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 55|TFoH, Ch. 55]]).

*Tens of thousands of Trollocs attack Rand at Lord [[Algarin]]’s manor. [[Lews Therin]] takes over Rand’s body and defeats them with Deathgates, Blossoms of Fire and Arrows of Fire ([[Knife of Dreams: Chapter 19|KoD, Ch. 19]]).

Suroth's full title is High Lady Suroth Sabelle Meldarath of Asinbayar and Barsabba. ([[Crossroads of Twilight: Chapter 6|CoT, Ch. 6]]) She assumed the command of the ''Hailene'' after the disaster at [[Falme]]. ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 1|TSR, Ch. 1]]) She has been praised repeatedly for her successes in [[Tarabon]], [[Amadicia]] and [[Altara]]. Many people believe that Suroth has commanded the Forerunners to successes undreamed of by [[the Empress]]. ([[Winter's Heart: Chapter 14|WH, Ch. 14]])

Suroth is a [[Darkfriend]] and served [[Ba'alzamon]] while he was alive. One of her tasks was to capture [[Egwene]], [[Elayne]] and [[Nynaeve]] and send them back to [[Seanchan]] as ''[[damane]]''. She failed. ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 40|TGH, Ch. 40]])

Suroth has both sides of her head shaved so that only a crest of black hair remains. To show that she is of the Blood, Suroth lacquers two of her fingernails blue. She has black eyes and is as tall as [[Liandrin]]. (TGH, Ch. 40) She is quite pretty. ([[Winter's Heart: Chapter 17|WH, Ch. 17]])

Suroth's full title is High Lady Suroth Sabelle Meldarath of Asinbayar and Barsabba. ([[Crossroads of Twilight: Chapter 6|CoT, Ch. 6]]) She assumed the command of the ''Hailene'' after the disaster at [[Falme]]. ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 1|TSR, Ch. 1]]) She has been praised repeatedly for her successes in [[Tarabon]], [[Amadicia]] and [[Altara]]. Many people believe that Suroth has commanded the Forerunners to successes undreamed of by [[the Empress]]. ([[Winter's Heart: Chapter 14|WH, Ch. 14]])

Suroth is a [[Darkfriend]] and served [[Ba'alzamon]] while he was alive. One of her tasks was to capture [[Egwene]], [[Elayne]] and [[Nynaeve]] and send them back to [[Seanchan]] as ''[[damane]]''. She failed. ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 40|TGH, Ch. 40]])

In [[Seanchan]], women who control [[damane]] through means of an ''[[a'dam]]''. They are selected at the same time as the ''damane'' in a yearly testing. It is not commonly known amongst the Seanchan that they are actually women who have the ability to learn to channel, but will not do so without training. Over time however, they develop an affinity so they can sense when others are channelling, typically to such an extent that they can be held by an ''a'dam''.
