==Description==

One of the key items on the 2010 [[Admin Meeting]] was the topic of Merit Badges.
A [[Merit Badge Focus Group]] was set up to discuss the number and requirements for badges.

Intended as rewards for continued and dedicated service to {{TV}} the list of badges became available in February 2011. In January 2014 a second focus group was set up to review the badges and identify any areas that were currently unrecognised, or any that were too difficult to achieve. These changes were implemented in the Fall of 2016.

While a reward in itself, merit badges may also used to determine other rewards members could receive. See [[#Privileges Earned|below]] for privileges.

Merit badges will be attainable by members of all ranks though some may only be attainable by members of certain ranks and none will be easily attainable. They will be designed to recognise the members who go above and beyond normal service, typically only the top 2-5% of people contributing in a given area will earn the badge.

==Merits Awarded==

The first Merits were [[2011 Awards|awarded]] at [[Anniversary Party 2011]]. [[Dralyn Montsier]] and her [[Merit Minion|minions]] worked hard in the weeks running up to it compiling information and verifying emails sent. Later in the year, at [[Europarty 2011]] and [[Dragon*Con 2011]] more merits were awarded to the members attending those events.
Merits were then awarded in [[2012_Awards#Merits|January 2012]], [[2013_Awards#Merits|January 2013]], [[2014_Awards#Merit_Awards|October 2014]], [[2015 Awards#Merit Awards|May 2015]] and every 3 months starting from [[2016 Awards#Merit Awards|January 2016]].

==Privileges Earned==

# Badges – Each Merit has a badge that can be shown in member's Drupal profile and signature. Members may choose up to five Gold Merit badges which they have earned to show underneath their avatar as well.
# Official Events Discount – Members who have the Events Attendance Gold Merit plus one other Gold Merit related to Official Events plus three other Gold Merits of any type (though only one Gold Merit from the Membership Category counts), will receive a 10% discount on tickets to our [[Winter Europarty]], [[Anniversary Party]], [[Summer Europarty]], [[Fall Ball]], and South Pacific events for the rest of their membership at {{TV}}.
# Extra Bond – Members who have the Senior Membership Gold Merit plus four other Gold Merits (not including the Membership Gold Merit), will have the ability to bond one person above their current limit. This means that {{Green}} {{as}} and Gaidin will be able to have three bondmates, {{Red}} Aes Sedai will be able to bond one Warder, and all other groups will be able to have two bondmates.

===Alignment===
Alignment refers to your team. Players on a mafia team are "mafia aligned" and players in the town are "town aligned".

===Bandwagon===
A bandwagon is a collection of votes for a particular player. Often games will require a certain number of votes to be cast for a player before they are lynched, so other players will vote for them, joining the bandwagon. The first player to vote for someone starts that player's bandwagon.

===Buddying===
This is the process of trying to make another player like you. Mafia will often try to employ this strategy with town players to improve how they are seen. Town players may try it as well to attempt to form a solid town contingent.

===Bussing===
Bussing is a strategy in which mafia players actively try to get one of their teammates lynched. This can make those mafia players seem more like town since they were instrumental in getting a mafia killed. The term originates from "throwing someone under the bus".

===Claim===
To claim is to say you are a certain role. Claims can be faked by both town and mafia, for various reasons, or may be partially or completely true. Players under pressure of being lynched will often claim. The effectiveness of a claim depends partially on whether the setup is known. Claiming is disallowed in some games.

===Counterclaim===
When one player claims, another may counterclaim, stating they are actually that role. This can be faked, just like a claim can be faked.

===Day===
Day is traditionally when everyone talks and may lynch a player. It typically falls in between periods of night. In some games, mafia cannot talk during this period.

===Flavor===
Flavor refers to a themed game. Many mods at Tar Valon put flavor in their game to make it more appealing.

===Hammer===
A hammer occurs when there is a vote threshold in play, which, once reached, ends the day phase. A hammered individual is lynched once hammer is reached.
Typically, hammering occurs when over half the existing voters cast a vote to lynch a player. Hammering is optional and only present in some games.

===Hydra===
A hydra consists of two players playing the same role, at the same time. This may be allowed by a mod when there are two players who wish to play but who cannot fully commit to being dedicated 100% to the game.

===Iso===
Iso is short for "isolate". This is typically used when looking at just one player's posts to see if trends can be picked up on. It is rarely used at the beginning of the game but can be a common practice later.

===L-1===
L-1 is typically used in hammer games, and refers to when a player has accumulated one less than the number of votes needed to hammer them. It stands for lynch minus one.

===Lurking===
To lurk is to be alive in game but not post. This can be frowned upon but is a legitimate strategy. A "lurker" is often described as someone who is not posting much, if at all.

===Lynch===
In most games, the collective players may choose to lynch another player during the day phase. Sometimes this takes a majority, sometimes it goes to whomever has the most votes. Some mods will allow for a no-lynch to occur. A lynched player dies at the end of the day. Both mafia and town may vote in the lynching process.

===Night===
Night is traditionally when the mafia plots to kill their targets. It typically falls in between periods of day. In some games, the town cannot talk during this period.

During the game, players post in the game thread trying to further their cause.

The game occurs in phases, known as Days and Nights. During the day, all players may vote to lynch another player. Exact rules on voting varies from game to game, but typically the player with the most votes ends up dead. The town players want to kill mafia this way, as it is often their only way to do so. Mafia wants to steer town astray while trying to look like town. During the night, special actions occur. The most common night action is a mafia kill, but usually other roles (both town or mafia) are in play that have special actions that occur at night.

The game ends when the mafia has reached a win condition (usually getting the remaining non-mafia players equal to the number of mafia), or when the town has killed off all the mafia.

==How do I join a game?==

Moderators take turns starting games. Once a moderator is ready to commence, they will post a sign up thread in the [https://www.tarvalon.net/forumdisplay.php?225-Mafia mafia forum]. You may sign up for any game that has open slots remaining, but first you must read and respond to [https://www.tarvalon.net/showthread.php?22811-Forum-Rules-Please-Read-and-Respond! the forum rules]. Once you have done that, post in the sign up thread for the game that has caught your eye.

If you have never played mafia before, you may want to watch a game so you get the hang of how things go. A great place to start for your first game is one of our weekly mini-mafia games. These 5-player games are simple, low pressure, and easy to understand, so you will be able to master the mechanics of mafia before moving on to our larger games.

- Have fun! It's just a game, and regardless of how players may act in game, we're all here to have fun playing a game we enjoy together.

- Don't be afraid to ask for pointers. Feel free to ask a veteran player to watch your play and give you suggestions. Check in the dead thread for games you aren't playing in, or ones in which you died. Talk to people who have played and get a feel for how you might do things differently, or areas in which you're doing really well.

It is discovered that Moiraine is an Aes Sedai who helped defend the town.

==Summary==
Morning is coming on as Rand approaches Emond's Field. At first he begins to smile until noticing the heavy smoke over the village. Half the village has been burned.

The blacksmith, Master Luhhan, rushes to Rand as he comes from the woods and helps him carry Tam to Nynaeve. Egwene, running around trying to help others, leads Rand and Master Luhhan to Nynaeve.

Master Luhhan speaks a bit of the night while they wait for Egwene to get Nynaeve. He tells Rand that [[Mat]]'s alive and that they will pick up the pieces and build again and that that Light will take care of them and if it doesn't they will take care of themselves. Then Master Luhhan leaves Rand to wait for Nynaeve, saying he has things to do.

Nynaeve looks Tam over but says she can do nothing for him. Nynaeve knows what her medicines can do and also knows when it's too late to help someone. Rand protests, but Nynaeve tells him she has to help those she knows she can help. Rand's hope crumbles and he feels empty. Thinking the Mayor will know what to do, Rand heads to the Winespring Inn.

Thom is outside the inn and helps Rand carry Tam inside. The Mayor is surprised to see the al'Thors alive and helps Rand get Tam to a bed.

He speaks to Rand of the night and how Moiraine called a ball of lightning down from the sky and Lan was a whirlwind with his sword, that he was a weapon himself, seeming to be in ten places at once fighting the [[Trollocs]].

After a little prompting from Thom, the Mayor suddenly realizes there is a way to help Tam. Mayor al'Vere tells Rand how [[Aes Sedai]] can [[heal]], and though nobody ever wants to get involved with Aes Sedai, its the only chance he can see to help Tam. Rand is willing to do anything, even deal with the Aes Sedai, to save Tam.

Rand goes and finds Moiraine and Lan who are searching the dead Trollocs. The Aes Sedai and her [[Warder]] discover Trollocs are working together in a way not seen since [[the Trolloc Wars]]. Moiraine says she fears they are further behind than ever.

Moiraine murmurs that there is 'A little more light in the darkness' when she sees Rand and asks him how his dreams are. Rand isn't concerned with dreams at the time and tells her about his father, saying he'll pay any price to save Tam. Moiraine is tired, but agrees to do what she can do for Rand's father.

Mazrim Taim is a [[Saldaea]]n [[false Dragon]] who joined [[Rand]] and became second in command to [[Asha'man]]. He was one of the false Dragons who could actually channel.

He has black hair and is slightly above average height. He has dark face, tilted eyes, high cheekbones and hooked nose of a Saldaean. When Rand meets him the first time, he is however, dressed in [[Andor]]an style. He looks to be about thirty-five, perhaps a little older ({{loc|2}}). He is a physically powerful man, who has something of a [[Warder]]'s grace in his movements ({{Prol9}}).

Taim appears to be almost as strong in One Power as Rand. Rand once ordered Taim to hold as much One Power as he could, but when Taim held amount only a little smaller than what Rand could hold, Rand didn't sense any strain ({{loc|3}}). Taim didn't know how to make a gateway before Rand showed him.

== Relationships ==

There is no mention that Taim had true friends. His relationships are based on power hierarchy. He is second in command of Asha'man, which puts him only a step below Rand in eyes of most Asha'man.

Though Taim has accepted Rand as his leader, his behavior towards Rand has always been far from submissive. He is clearly a very dangerous man.

[[Cadsuane]] has helped capture both Logain and Taim ({{acos|9}}).

Taim has a lot of men directly loyal to him. Logain claims forty one with fifty more in training ({{kod|18}}) and Pevara nots almost a hundred ({{epi11}}).

When Mishraille almost reveals that Aes Sedai have already bonded men, he clubs him with air and does not care if he lives or dies ({{epi11}}).

==Timeline==

* Mazrim Taim set himself up as a false Dragon in Saldaea ({{tgh|4}}). He hadn't had yet time to attract many followers. Aes Sedai had been sent to deal with him.

* [[Aes Sedai]] captured him at Irinjavar, Saldaea. He was captured in same circumstances as another false Dragon. At the moment Rand announced himself as Dragon, his horse reared up and threw him He was knocked unconscious, his followers who thought him dead, fled, and he was taken ({{tdr|12}}).

* He escaped from his Aes Sedai captors at the village of Denhuir, east of [[Black Hills]], at night. Two Aes Sedai got killed in the process ({{tsr|17}}).

* He is lead in by Lord [[Davram Bashere]]'s men, to meet the [[Dragon Reborn]] and to accept the amnesty that Rand has granted to all men able to channel. Taim taunts Bashere about events in Saldaea. Rand tells him that the vision in the sky was not [[the Dark One]], but [[Ishamael]]. Taim submits to the Dragon Reborn and tells Rand, that he can teach a man to channel and to test a man's ability to channel. He presents one of seals to the Dark One's prison to Rand ({{loc|2}}).

* He travels with Rand to the farm. He realizes that Rand doesn't know how to test a man's ability to channel. Taim tests [[Damer Flinn]]. A tiny flame appears. This is first time when Taim channels. Taim asks to train men as weapons, and Rand agrees. Rand tells Taim to seize ''saidin''. He can hold almost as much ''saidin'' as Rand ({{loc|3}}).

* Rand arrives at the farm where Taim teaches his students to make stones explode. He tells Rand about his teaching methods ({{loc|11}}).

* Taim teaches his recruits how to blow up rocks and shield themselves. He asks Rand permission to Travel to villages to recruit new men, and Rand agrees ({{loc|11}}).

* He travels to Royal Palace to bring news of [[Jahar Narishma]], a young man who has the spark. He arrives just in time to kill a [[Gray Men|Gray man]] who is attacking Rand ({{loc|28}}).

* Rand comes to the [[Black Tower]] to meet him. He seems angered when Rand gives him his pins of rank. He tells Rand that there are many Aes Sedai in [[Caemlyn]] and several parties of Aes Sedai of Red Ajah in the countryside near the Black Tower. Red Ajah Aes Sedai are trying to intercept men coming to the Black Tower. Rand warns him again to stay away from Caemlyn and says that he will hold him personally responsible if any harm happens to any of the Aes Sedai ({{loc|42}}).

* Rand sends a note to him to inform him that there are now thirteen Aes Sedai in Caemlyn ({{loc|49}}).

* Taim comes with Asha'man to rescue Rand from hands of Aes Sedai at [[Dumai's Wells]]. He leads Asha'man to fight Shaido using the [[One Power]]. He is with Rand when the Aes Sedai kneel to him ({{loc|55}}).

* After [[Dumai's Wells]], Taim remains with Rand. He ordered [[Gedwyn]], who is one of the few full Asha'man, to look for something that wasn't found. According to [[Perrin]], he smells of fury when Rand stops his argument with [[Wise Ones]] on what to do with Aes Sedai, though he doesn't otherwise show emotion. Against his suggestion, Rand decides that Wise Ones will take care of Aes Sedai prisoners. Rand orders Taim to take Asha'man to Black Tower, and Taim agrees to do that personally. He asks Rand to take Asha'man with him to be his honor guard, and smells angry, when Rand chooses [[Dashiva]] instead of one of more advanced Asha'man ({{acos|2}}).

* He sends a letter to Rand. There he tells that Black Tower now has 29 Asha'man, 97 Dedicated and 322 Soldiers. He also reports, that there has also been a handful of deserters but concludes that losses are acceptable. He believes that soon Black Tower will equal to the White Tower. He says also, that he picked that blackberry bush himself and that it was small and thorny, but with a surprising amount of fruit. [[Peral Torval|Torval]] tells Rand, that Taim poisons the Asha'man who become mad because of the taint in ''saidin''. He considers it kindness to them, as well safe to others ({{tpod|14}}).

* He comes to Rand to report that Gedwyn, [[Kisman]], [[Rochaid]] and Torval have deserted. He is surprised and angry when Rand adds Dashiva to the list ({{tpod|29}}). Rand orders him to return to Black Tower and not to return.

* He responds to [[Elayne]]'s summon and comes to her with two of his Asha'man. He agrees to let the Queen's Guards inspect Black Tower ({{Prol9}}).

* He returns to the Black Tower and posts the names of the deserters. They deserters are: Gedwyn, Kisman, Rochaid, Torval, Dashiva, Flinn, Hopwil and Narishma ({{Prol9}}).

* Taim has ordered Kisman to kill Rand ({{wh|22}}).

Min is trying to convince Rand to go see [[Elayne]] in [[Caemlyn]]. Fedwin Morr is present as well to send away people Rand doesn't want to see at that moment. Min is reminded how young he really is when she makes a comment on Rand sulking to him. Rand is determined to push Elayne away after he has received news this morning of her arrival in Caemlyn and the fact she had the Dragon Banners removed. Rand thinks she doesn't want him in [[Caemlyn]]. Before Min can resort to kicking to make him see sense Sorilea comes in though.

She brings five [[Aes Sedai]], Elza Penfell, Nesune Bihara, Beldeine Nyram, Erian Boroleos and Sarene Nemdahl, who came to Caemlyn to kidnap Rand. They have been in the care of the [[Wise Ones]] for a while and are now ready to serve the [[Dragon Reborn]]. Rand asks them why and they each have their own reasons. Min has a viewing that each of the women, including Sorilea, will serve Rand in her own way. Whatever that may mean. Rand accepts if they are willing to swear fealty like some of the other sisters did. The five promptly do and Rands tells Sorilea to put them with the others who have sworn fealty.

After they leave Rand decides it is time to find out what [[Cadsuane]] wants. He asks Min to join him, maybe she'll have a viewing. Min doesn't want to leave him out of her sight anyway so she accepts. They have just left the throne room when a massive blast hits the palace. The throne room they have left just moments earlier is reduced to rubble. Rand gives Morr orders to take Min to a safe place and guard her with his life. Morr assures Min he will take care of her. But who will take care of Rand?

As soon as Rand rounds the corner he seizes [[One Power|the Source]]. He doesn't want Min to see the effort it takes. He felt channeling from several directions just before the blast but it was too late to do anything about it. Are the [[Forsaken]] coming after him again? Rand starts searching the palace where chaos is now breaking out. Some people demand to know what happened, others fear the Dragon Reborn has gone mad.

Rand uses folded light to make sure he isn't seen but he is spotted once by Shalon and Ailil anyway. He shields and binds them to keep them save. Shielding takes a lot of the Power though, he might have exposed himself doing so. When he leaves the room he hid both women in he sees Dashiva, Gedwyn and Rochaid. They are arguing over whether or not Rand is dead. Aparently Dashiva spots him and he channels. Without knowing exactly what he does Rand channels to protect himself and runs from the scene. When he returns later he can't find a trace of the three [[Asha'man]]. A bit later he runs into Narishma and Flinn and almost kills the first. Rand lies he didn't recognize him. The Asha'man seem to think everybody needs some time to cool down. Rand agrees and continues his search. He doesn't find the three Asha'man who tried to kill him though.

Min is looking at Rand who is in turn looking at Morr. It wasn't fair what happened to Morr. She hoped Rand still had him shielded. Instead of Morr watching Min, Min had been watching Morr. Morr himself is now playing with wooden block building a tower, his mind now that of a small child.

Taim comes to see Rand. He reports Rochaid, Gedwyn, [[Kisman]] and [[Torval]], all with Rand on his expedition against the Seanchan in [[Altara]] have deserted. He also offers to take 'this one' off Rand's hands. Rand reminds him that this one has a name. Fedwin Morr. Rand personally gives Morr the drugged wine to grant Morr a merciful death. Taim remarks Rand is harder than he thought. Min has to force herself not to cry.

Rand gives Taim orders to return to the [[Black Tower]], add Dashiva to the traitors list and make sure the deserters are caught and killed. Rand himself will be traveling around for a bit. After Taim leaves Min tells Rand he can cry, that he won't melt if he does. Rand replies he has no time for tears. Min asks when they are going to leave. She isn't going to let him go of alone again. Ever.

Rand leaves Lanfear in his rooms and finds his [[Aiel]] guard dead in the doorway. Battle is raging in the Stone with [[Trollocs]] and [[Myrddraal|Fades]]. He takes on a Fade right outside his door and shouts out battle cries in the hope of keeping the remaining Defenders of the Stone from fleeing and they begin to echo his shouts. Rand battles with the Fade and each time his Power-wrought sword meets the Fade's [[Thakan'dar]] blade lightning flashes from them. Eventually he begins to overpower the Fade and his blade shears the Fades in two. He kills the Fade also taking out the Trollocs that are bonded with it. The Defenders obey his commands about the injured and the care of their blades. This is the first time they have accepted his leadership, so he orders them to follow him, again shouting battle cries (which they also take up).

He leads the remaining Defenders through the Stone killing as many [[Shadowspawn]] as possible. Everywhere there is fighting in small groups. Some of the Aiel join him along the way. At one point he sees Moiraine and Lan and sees Lan get injured but can do nothing to help as he is swamped by Trollocs. By the time he is finished with them Moiraine and Lan are gone. He also notices that some of the battles going on are between men and those [[Darkfriends]] in the Stone that have sided with the Shadowspawn. He also sees Trollocs fighting Trollocs and assumes that the Myrddraal have lost control over them and their bloodlust has taken over.

Rand takes on a group of Trollocs, one of which falls trapping him as another advances on him. A fourth Trolloc splits the advancing Trolloc's head open and leaves Rand alone. Rand is astonished that a Trolloc appears to have saved him. Rand stops to watch two Fades fighting each other in the hallways. Lanfear appears behind him and pretty much admits that this conflict between the Shadowspawn is her doing. He uses the Power to pin her up against the wall but cannot remember how to shield her. She reminds Rand that he has left ''[[Callandor]]'' in his rooms and that anyone could take it. She then breaks his weaves and taunts him. He leaves her to run back to his rooms for ''Callandor''. He is hesitant to use it but takes it up anyway. A Fade appears in the doorway and he reaches for ''saidin'' using ''Callandor''. The Fade turns to flee but, without even realizing he had channeled he destroys it.

He then goes after the remaining Shadowspawn burning them all with the Power where they stand. Rand needs to do more, something to kill all of them. He raises ''Callandor'' and draws on the Source, he has no idea what he does but creates a spinning mass of light and it seems like a voice in his head is telling when to unleash it. Lightning from the mass goes shooting across the ceilings which strike down at all the Shadowspawn throughout the Stone. He can feel the lightning striking them down.

Moiraine appears and also does not know what he did. She is shocked and lost for words, but seems to think there may be something wrong with Rand and keeps her distance. Rand sees a small girl dead and is so distressed he tries to bring her back to life using ''Callandor'' and the Power but it does not work and he begs for Moiraine to Heal her. She tells him she cannot Heal the dead but that she will see that the girl's body is taken care of. Rand is upset that he is too late to save them all. He then asks if his friends are alive and Moiraine tells him that they are. Lan explains that the Trollocs came in on grain barges and wagons and he is contemptuous that nobody thought to check why grain should be brought to the Stone. Rand tells Moiraine about Lanfear but she is not surprised, she tells Rand about Lanfear and [[Lews Therin]]'s relationship. Moiraine [[Heal]]s Rand and he finally tells her that he will decide his next move that night and tell her tomorrow.

Moiraine appears and also does not know what he did. She is shocked and lost for words, but seems to think there may be something wrong with Rand and keeps her distance. Rand sees a small girl dead and is so distressed he tries to bring her back to life using ''Callandor'' and the Power but it does not work and he begs for Moiraine to Heal her. She tells him she cannot Heal the dead but that she will see that the girl's body is taken care of. Rand is upset that he is too late to save them all. He then asks if his friends are alive and Moiraine tells him that they are. Lan explains that the Trollocs came in on grain barges and wagons and he is contemptuous that nobody thought to check why grain should be brought to the Stone. Rand tells Moiraine about Lanfear but she is not surprised, she tells Rand about Lanfear and [[Lews Therin]]'s relationship. Moiraine [[Heal]]s Rand and he finally tells her that he will decide his next move that night and tell her tomorrow.

==Summary==
Rand leaves Lanfear in his rooms and finds his [[Aiel]] guard dead in the doorway. Battle is raging in the Stone with [[Trollocs]] and [[Myrddraal|Fades]]. He takes on a Fade right outside his door and shouts out battle cries in the hope of keeping the remaining Defenders of the Stone from fleeing and they begin to echo his shouts. Rand battles with the Fade and each time his Power-wrought sword meets the Fade's [[Thakan'dar]] blade lightning flashes from them. Eventually he begins to overpower the Fade and his blade shears the Fades in two. He kills the Fade also taking out the Trollocs that are bonded with it. The Defenders obey his commands about the injured and the care of their blades, this is the first time they have accepted his leadership so he orders them to follow him, again shouting battle cries (which they also take up).

He leads the remaining Defenders through the Stone killing as many [[Shadowspawn]] as possible. Everywhere there is fighting in small groups. Some of the Aiel join him along the way. At one point he sees Moiraine and Lan and sees Lan get injured but he can do nothing to help as he is swamped by Trollocs. By the time he is finished with them Moiraine and Lan are gone. He also notices that some of the battles going on are between men and those [[Darkfriends]] in the Stone that have sided with the Shadowspawn. He also sees Trollocs fighting Trollocs and assumes that the Myrddraal have lost control over them and their bloodlust has taken over.

Rand takes on a group of Trollocs, one of which falls trapping him as another advances on him. A fourth Trolloc splits the advancing Trolloc's head open and leaves Rand alone. Rand is astonished that a Trolloc appears to have saved him. Rand stops to watch two Fades fighting each other in the hallways. Lanfear appears behind him and pretty much admits that this conflict between the Shadowspawn is her doing. He uses the Power to pin her up against the wall but cannot remember how to shield her. She reminds Rand that he has left ''[[Callandor]]'' in his rooms and that anyone could take it. She then breaks his weaves and taunts him. He leaves her to run back to his rooms for ''Callandor''. He is hesitant to use it but takes it up anyway. A Fade appears in the doorway and he reaches for ''saidin'' using ''Callandor''. The Fade turns to flee but, without even realizing he had channeled he destroys it.

He then goes after the remaining Shadowspawn burning them all with the Power where they stand. Rand needs to do more, something to kill all of them. He raises ''Callandor'' and draws on the Source, he has no idea what he does but creates a spinning mass of light and it seems like a voice in his head is telling when to unleash it. Siuan also tells Elayne her mother has paid a visit to Tar Valon and that she was very upset by the disappearance of her daughter. The Amyrlin managed to convince her Elayne needs more time in the Tower though. She left a letter with the Mistress of Novices for Elayne and refused to take her [[Aes Sedai]] advisor back to [[Caemlyn]]. The Amyrlin wants to know if Elayne wants to go to [[Morgase|her Mother]]. Elayne wants to become Aes Sedai though. The Amyrlin is pleased by this answer, she had no intention of letting Elayne go. She asks the Keeper to take Elayne to the Mistress of Novices. Comelle was one of the great cities of the [[Age of Legends]], before the [[Breaking of the World]]. According to what information we have, it was the third largest/most important city during this time.

Comelle was a coastal city, overlooking the sea with "breathtaking splendor" from the mountain it was situated on. Its "immense glass, crystal, and metal structures clung to the steep rock like a shining flower bursting from the stone." It disappeared into the sea, along with all the land for a hundred leagues east.

Comelle was located somewhere in the west.

Mat and the others are attacked by the townsfolk and barely escape. In the morning they find out all the people they saw being killed are alive. The mayor tells them this started happening a few months ago and they don't remember and can't escape it. He also says a woman in a nearby town hands pictures looking for Mat and Perrin.

==Summary==
Mat, Talamanes, and the others fight their way from the townsfolk, who are mindlessly attacking them and not caring if they are injured or killed themselves. Delarn falls and is pulled from his horse, so Mat goes back for him, against Talmanes' advice. They go to the inn the [[Aes Sedai]] were relaxing at and are attacked by a fireball before they can tell the [[Aes Sedai]] who they are. Edesina [[Heal]]s Delarn.

Joline at first says they would rather stay, but Mat makes her see that the attacks will just keep coming and they will just have to keep killing more people. She agrees to go, but only if they can take the serving girls, who they have tied up, with them. They make it out of the village and camp outside. They are unsure what has happened, but Thom tells Mat there may be some connection to him as he got a drawing of Mat from a drunken man in the village.

As dawn breaks, the serving girls vanish and Mat insists on returning to see what happened. They notice that the amount of blood is not sufficient and Barlden overhears them, so comes to tell what happened. He says that it started some months before, and that they wake up in bed each day, with few memories of the night before and that they don't want to know. People who spend the night in the town become trapped there, part of the same nightmare and people who try to leave are returned each day, no matter where they are. He tells them they should just leave and that they will honour the bet. He also tells them of a woman in [[Trustair]], a town a few miles away, who has been handing out pictures with good likenesses of both Mat and [[Perrin]].

Murandy is a landlocked nation bordering on [[Altara]], [[Illian (Nation)|Illian]] and [[Andor]]. The border with Andor has always been fluid, with many wars and skirmishes, but after the [[Salidar Aes Sedai]] spent a month there, the new border became effectively fixed ({{tpod|18}}). To the east lies the unclaimed land of the hills of Kintara. As with Altara, it is in many ways a land in name only, with many inhabitants seeing themselves as primarily subjects of a particular lord or lady rather than a subject of a monarch. The nobles themselves seldom pay taxes or more than lip service to the king. It is perhaps only the fact that it is surrounded by strong neighbours that keeps it together as a nation, since fear of annexation is strong. Despite this, they can act together if the need is there; for example, and when a [[false Dragon]] arose in Murandy, they dealt with him surprisingly quickly ({{tgh|4}}). The Eastern border closely follows the [[River Storn]] and the western border closely follows the [[River Manetherendrelle]].

Following [[Rand]]'s battle in [[Falme]] and his taking of [[the Stone]], Murandy, as with many of the other countries, suffered from [[Dragonsworn]]. This was exacerbated by [[Pedron Niall]] and a plan he set in motion to have Dragonsworn plague the country ({{prol6}}; {{acos|12}}).

Though in theory ruled by King Roedran, in practice Murandy has long been a patchwork of all but independent lands, held together more by the fear of Illian and Andor swallowing them up than by any loyalty to the country itself. The throne has changed hands numerous times, often at short intervals ({{tfoh|11}}). When [[Egwene]] took the rebel Aes Sedai to [[the Tower]], they marched through Murandy and were opposed at the border by a mixture of Andoran and Murandian nobles. After the Aes Sedai decision to stay a month, the Murandians started to look to the Andorans for leadership ({{tpod|18}}).

There have been attempts to unify the country, most recently in 996NE, when the [[Aes Sedai]] identified a lord [[Dulain]] as a man who might be able to achieve this and instructed [[Gareth Bryne]] not to interfere with his border raids. Unfortunately, he was killed by a farmer in such a raid ({{tfoh|28}}). Since that time, Roedran has made an effort to extend his control by using [[the Band of the Red Hand]] as a threat that the nobles must unite against, with the intention that by the time the threat is over, they will be so tightly bound to him that they cannot get free ({{tpod|18}}). This seems to work as he does gather them behind him ({{wh|8}}) and is satisfied enough when the deal ends that not only does he give enough money to pay the Band for well over a year, he also gives [[Talmanes]] a copy of ''Fog and Steel'', by [[Madoc Comadrin]] ({{kod|25}}).

In the Queen's Blessing, Basel Gill tells Rand and Mat more about the current situation. Rand meets Loial.

Master Gill settles Rand and Mat down at a table in the corner and offers them a plate of food. Not a grand meal, the troubles of the world have not passed by Caemlyn. Food is in short supply. The innkeeper wants to know what kind of trouble Rand and Mat are in. Rand tells him the story, leaving out the worst of the [[Shadowspawn]], and tells him they were hoping to meet their friends here. Rand intends to head for [[Tar Valon]] if they do not show up.

Master Gill tells them approaching the [[Aes Sedai]] advisor of Queen [[Morgase]], [[Elaida]] of the [[Red Ajah]], will not be a good idea because of their connection with [[Thom]] and he hints at political trouble in the city. Before he can explain he is called away to the kitchen though. Rand and Mat are taken to their room in the attic by one of the maids where Mat lies down on the bed and refuses to get up. He has been suspicious and pessimistic throughout the conversation with Master Gill. Rand goes down to see if he can find the innkeeper alone.

Master Gill is nowhere to be found and after spending some time in the common room of the inn, Rand retreats to the privacy of the library. Rand is admiring Master Gill's collection of books when he notices he is not alone. A creature looking like a Trolloc to Rand shares the room with him. Rand panics and reaches for his sword but the creature assures Rand that he is not a Trolloc and introduces himself as Loial. Loial is an [[Ogier]].

Loial tells him what he is doing in Caemlyn. He left the ''[[stedding]]'', the home of Ogier they are tied to in some way, without permission of the Elders to see the world he has read about. Especially the Groves. At ninety years of age he is not allowed to go 'Outside' without their permission. Loial seems to think the world has changed a lot since the books he read were written.

The Ogier seems to think that Rand is an [[Aiel]] and is surprised to learn Rand is from the [[Two Rivers]] - which he knows as [[Manetheren]]. Loial asks Rand why he is so far from home. For some reason Rand feels compelled to tell Loial the truth. The whole story this time. After listening carefully the Ogier tells Rand he is ''[[ta'veren]]'', a person whose thread the Pattern weaves the threads of other lives around. Maybe his friends are, too. Loial asks permission to travel with Rand. He does not want to miss the opportunity to travel with a ''ta'veren''. Considering the danger he is in Rand politely declines the offer. He still fears for the life of his friends. Loial comforts him and tells him his friends will be alright. Rand is not too sure about that.

Tuon is surprised that Rand is so young, wondering where he learned to be so regal if tales of him being raised on a farm were not just stories told so he could connect with the common folk. The sight of Nynaeve with him disturbs her and she thinks she could never be comfortable around a ''marath'damane'', but Flinn and Narishma disturb her even more. She feels she is taking a risk meeting with him, even with all the guards and other protection she has. She considers how this meeting is the reason she has not proclaimed herself Empress, as once she does, she won't be able to meet with anyone, even the [[Dragon Reborn]], on equal terms. Rand addresses her and realizes that Selucia is her bodyguard, which surprises her. He tells her that he must have peace and she wonders which of the prophecies he has yet to fulfill. He tells her that the [[Seanchan]] are a distraction for him and that peace need only last until he dies. She suggests he unite his lands beneath the Seanchan banner but he refuses, calling the ''[[a'dam]]'' "foul leashes." Tuon wonders how he can be bold enough to interrupt her, deciding that it is because he is the Dragon Reborn.

She realizes that she is losing control of the discussion so mentions Mat, disparaging him and is surprised at the vehemence with which both Rand and Nynaeve defend him, again causing her to reconsider just how much she really knew him. Rand leans in to her and tells her she must call off the attacks and sign a treaty. She finds herself longing to obey, but manages to refuse. She tells him he will bow before her, thinking that he cannot be allowed his freedom. He turns and leaves and she proclaims herself Empress, telling Galgan to instruct [[Yulan]] to prepare the raid on the [[White Tower]].

==Summary==
Egwene waits for Sheriam to announce her before entering the Hall. The woman arrives a little flustered.

Not every Sitter is yet present inside the Hall. They make their way in one by one while the session begins. [[Akarrin]] is called to report what her group has found. They tell the Hall about the hole where [[Shadar Logoth]] once used to be and the great amount of ''[[saidin]]'' that was used.

After the group leaves, [[Moria Karentanis|Moria]] points out that their arrangements of [[linking]] could not stand against [[Forsaken]] using such a powerful weapon, which is what they think might have happened. Her proposal is to contact [[the Black Tower]] for help and include the [[Asha'man]] in the circles. The five Sitters that had proposed the negotiations with [[Elaida]] and [[the White Tower]] start protesting loudly.

Egwene reins them in and asks the Hall to stand. After a while everyone agrees except for [[Faiselle]], [[Magla]], [[Saroiya]], [[Takima]] and [[Varilin]].

Perrin and Egwene walk through the woods.

==Summary==
Perrin wakes in a small copse of trees along the east bank of the River Arinelle and grabs his axe, looking around for [[Trollocs]] as the memory of the night before comes back to him.

He watches the river and knowing himself to be the stronger swimmer, he heads downriver to search for Egwene. He walks for several miles before finding a hoof-print made by one of [[Haral Luhhan|Master Luhhan]]'s horseshoes.

Following the trail, Perrin finds Egwene and [[Bela]] in a clearing under a hemlock with a small fire going and Egwene wielding a branch like a club. Egwene hugs Perrin when she sees it is him and then pushes him over to the fire to dry off, seeing he is still wet.

Egwene says it was Bela that got her across the river and that she hasn't seen anyone else. Perrin finishes eating some of the food Egwene had given him before replying that he hasn't seen anyone either.

Perrin says he's been thinking, to Egwene's surprise. Not knowing if anyone else is alive or dead, but hoping they are, Perrin and Egwene decide to get moving instead of waiting for Trollocs to find them and Perrin thinks they should head towards [[Caemlyn]] since [[Myrddraal|Fades]] will most likely be heading down to [[Whitebridge]].

Perrin asks if there's a chance he can have any more bread and cheese and she replies that it may have to last a long time. Perrin thinks about being a leader and says that they best get started and kicks dirt over the fire.
