Setting: The Royal Palace in Caemlyn

Point of view: Rand, Min, Merana

Rand's point of view:

Rand and Perrin are in a courtyard, when Loial appears. Their reunion is cheerful until Rand mentions that Loial's mother, Elder Haman, and Erith were in Caemlyn, but had gone on to Emond's Field. Loial is sure that they are looking to have him marry Erith and settle down. He is quite upset until he starts speaking of Erith's beauty.

Rand asks Loial's aid in the finding of all the Waygates and putting guards on them; Perrin is angry that Rand is trying to use his friends again. Abruptly, Min arrives, saying that seven of the Aes Sedai of the embassy are coming - Merana and two others had visited twice in a row; then the visits had stopped for five days. Rand only knows Demira has been in bed.

Lews Therin begins to mutter again at the thought of facing seven Aes Sedai; he trails off as Rand thinks of the angreal he has.

Berlana goes to inform Nandera, whilst Sulin and Jalani accompany Rand to his rooms to prepare. Rand tells Min to stay with Loial and Perrin.

After retrieving his coat, the Dragon goes to the Grand Hall, where Bael, Melaine, and one hundred Maidens await - Bashere and his wife are outside the city with the troops. Similarly, there is a lack of nobles, indicating that it is known that there are Aes Sedai in the palace.

As soon as Rand takes a seat, Reene Harfor announces the Aes Sedai: Merana, leading Faeldrin Harella, Valinde Nathenos, Demira Eriff, Seonid and Masuri. Rand recognises the use of the Mirror of Mists as the Aes Sedai approaching seemingly grow larger. Demira speaks: she says that they no longer agree to his restrictions. Rand breaks through the Illusion by channelling Fire, Spirit and Earth, then dismisses them, saying the restrictions still stand. The Aes Sedai leave, and Melaine says he handled them well. Rand is curious as to what they were after.

Min slips away from Perrin and Loial to watch Rand's audience with the Aes Sedai. All the weaves being used obscure her ability to view things, however. She gets her horse and returns to her inn, where the innkeeper - Mistress Chinchonine - is sour, as there is a lack of patrons. Min speaks with Rafela's Warder, Mahiro Shukosa, who says that the Aes Sedai are furious, but he refuses to tell her why. Bera Harkin and Kiruna Nachiman enter the common room, where Min gets a viewing: a brownish-yellow and deep purple aura. Min hears Kiruna say that Alanna should have brought Rand under control. Min wonders why they are not in the Waste. The Warder with them tells Min that they were halfway to Cairhien, then they heard Rand was in Caemlyn. He hints at the fact that Rand is in trouble with Aes Sedai. Min notes that there are now thirteen Aes Sedai, and gallops back to the palace to warn Rand.

Rand's point of view:

When Min speaks to Rand about the two new arrivals, now making thirteen Aes Sedai, Lews Therin almost takes saidin from Rand. She also tells him of her viewing of Bera and Kiruna. The two women and Rand will be in the same place at the same time - to experience blood, death, and the One Power. Rand decides he is leaving, and takes Min with him. Outside his rooms, two Maidens - Beralna and Jalani - are standing guard. He sends Berlana to get Nandera and as many Maidens as she wishes, and send them to Perrin's rooms - her cannot leave his childhood friend because one of the Aes Sedai may Bond him. Rand assures Min that he would rather cut his arm off than hurt her - she reacts in an odd way. Loial, Bain, Chiad, Gaul, and Faile are accompanying Rand too, as well as Sulin.

Perrin sends a message to the Two Rivers men to follow them, and Faile writes to her parents explaining why she is leaving. Min writes to Rafela's Warder, Mahiro, and Loial writes to Erith. Rand, in turn, sends a warning of the thirteen Aes Sedai to Taim, and then a latter of warning to Merana. All of these are given to Reene Harfor.

Nandera arrives with five hundred Maidens, and Rand opens a gateway to the Sun Palace. He becomes so exhausted that Loial carries Rand to his rooms.

Merana's point of view:

Merana is rereading Rand's letter - he says he has gone to Cairhien. She has permission to follow him, but only with six Aes Sedai in total, which would leave them on equal footing with the White Tower embassy. Berenicia is quiet, while Masuri, Rafela, Seonid and Faeldrin seem determined. The rest seem more at peace. All Aes Sedai are present except Verin and Alanna.Kiruna and Bera are now in charge.

Demira's eye-and-ear has informed her that Rand is gone. Verin, in turn, enters, and announces that the Two Rivers men are preparing to move. Merana thinks about how Verin managed to manipulate Demira into suggesting the confrontation with Rand.

Outline

Nynaeve and Elayne have an audience with Queen Tylin.

Summary

Nynaeve - trying to calm herself; Elayne - irritated because Thom and Juilin have rooms in the servants' quarters; Birgitte, and Aviendha all have rooms that share a common sitting room in the Tarasin Palace. They had been introduced to Merilille, an Aes Sedai of the Gray - as Aes Sedai, but then dismissed like Accepted. It seems that Adeleas and Vandene are looking for runaways from the Tower - although the former Accepted in the sitting room cannot puzzle out why exactly here - while Nynaeve and company focus on the weather ter'angreal. They decide that they will purchase dresses of Ebou Dari cut to blend in, so they can search better.

At that moment, a servant enters, saying the Queen wishes to see the three Aes Sedai; Elayne says that there are only two there, but she and Nynaeve go, while Birgitte and Aviendha go to scout the city. As the two Aes Sedai are led to the Queen, Nynaeve sees Jaichim Carridin; it turns out that the Whitecloaks had sent an embassy, too; months ago.

When they arrive to meet the Queen - who is sceptical that they are Aes Sedai - she tells them to 'lean back on their knives and let their tongues go free.' They speak first of the Whitecloaks - Tylin needs much aid because she wants her son to have the throne after her - then Elayne speaks of their search for the ter'angreal. The Queen says that she hopes they will not change; her previous advisor, Cavandra, who had returned to the Tower, had been as good to speak with. They then speak of the best way to search the Rahad - where, from Elayne's description, the Queen says the ter'angreal is - and stay safe. As Elayne and Nynaeve leave, on their way back to their apartments, Elayne makes a wager with Nynaeve that it will take ten days to find the ter'angreal.
