Setting: Altara

Point of view: Mat

Mat has been travelling to Ebou Dar with Elayne and Nynaeve, and accompanied by Adeleas, Aviendha, Birgitte, Jaem, Juilin, Thom, and Vandene; similarly, a dozen Redarms, Nalesean, Vanin, and Olver, are a part of the company. Mat has two personal servants, shared with Nalesean; Nerim and Lopin.

Elayne and Nynaeve both seem nervous; Olver dislikes both Aviendha and Birgitte; Mat believes Birgitte is a Hunter of the Horn - the atmosphere is slightly tense.  Jaem and Vanin are sent to scout ahead; at that time, Elayne asks Mat to see his foxhead medallion - he refuses, and later feels the Aes Sedai channel at him.

On the third day of their travels, they reach the first village. Nynaeve is avoiding Mat, for some reason. They move on to another village, and stay at an inn by the name of The Marriage Dagger. Mat learns from Thom that Birgitte is Elayne's Warder; the Hero of the Horn and Jaem have become friends.

They decide that they will purchase dresses of Ebou Dari cut to blend in, so they can search better.

During the fourth evening, the party stays at The Southern Hoop in So Tehar. It is determined by the Aes Sedai that things can be thrown at Mat, and not be blocked by his medallion.
+
At that moment, a servant enters, saying the Queen wishes to see the three Aes Sedai; Elayne says that there are only two there, but she and Nynaeve go, while Birgitte and Aviendha go to scout the city. As the two Aes Sedai are led to the Queen, Nynaeve sees Jaichim Carridin; it turns out that the Whitecloaks had sent an embassy, too; months ago.

On the fifth day, the group reaches Ebou Dar. Mat feels the dice tumbling as they arrive at Mol Hara Square and the Tarasin Palace - home to Queen Tylin. He does not want to stay in the palace, so he chooses an inn at random across the square; the inn goes by the name The Wandering Woman. Thom and Juilin stay at the palace; Mat, Nalesean and the Redarms enter the inn, where they are greeted by Setalle Anan.

When they arrive to meet the Queen - who is sceptical that they are Aes Sedai - she tells them to 'lean back on their knives and let their tongues go free.' They speak first of the Whitecloaks - Tylin needs much aid because she wants her son to have the throne after her - then Elayne speaks of their search for the ter'angreal. The Queen says that she hopes they will not change; her previous advisor, Cavandra, who had returned to the Tower, had been as good to speak with. They then speak of the best way to search the Rahad - where, from Elayne's description, the Queen says the ter'angreal is - and stay safe. As Elayne and Nynaeve leave, on their way back to their apartments, Elayne makes a wager with Nynaeve that it will take ten days to find the ter'angreal.

The dice have stopped.

Outline

Nynaeve and Elayne have an audience with Queen Tylin.

Summary

Nynaeve - trying to calm herself; Elayne - irritated because Thom and Juilin have rooms in the servants' quarters; Birgitte, and Aviendha all have rooms that share a common sitting room in the Tarasin Palace. They had been introduced to Merilille, an Aes Sedai of the Gray - as Aes Sedai, but then dismissed like Accepted. It seems that Adeleas and Vandene are looking for runaways from the Tower - although the former Accepted in the sitting room cannot puzzle out why exactly here - while Nynaeve and company focus on the weather ter'angreal. They decide that they will purchase dresses of Ebou Dari cut to blend in, so they can search better.
