General

Gregorin Panar den Lushenos is an Illianer nobleman and a member of the Council of Nine. He is a tall, round-faced man with the typical Illianer beard and a natural dignified air around him (ACoS, Ch. 41).

Two days after Mattin Stepaneos, the King of Illian, disappears, Lord Gregorin, as the speaker for the Council of Nine, presents Rand the Laurel Crown and offers him the throne and all of Illian. They needed a new King, but Rand's taking in the city was only a small part of their submission. They are still grateful for the grain ships from Tear that Rand had ordered to Illian, because as "Lord Brend", Sammael made sure that every loaf of bread went to his armies (ACoS, Ch. 41). Later, Rand names him his Steward in Illian (WH, Prologue; CoT, Ch. 18).

Timeline

  • As the speaker for the Council of Nine, he offers Rand the Laurel Crown, the throne and the nation of Illian (ACoS, Ch. 41).
  • Rand takes him along to the meeting with one band of soldiers loyal to "Lord Brend"/Sammael. Lord Gregorin proposes to go alone with First Captain Marcolin, since the people might not have respect for their new King, but Rand declines. High Lord Weiramon accuses the Council of keeping the bands of Sammael's soldiers together. Rand rides forward with Lord Gregorin, First Captain Demetre Marcolin, Eben Hopwil and Corlan Dashiva to talk to the leader of the men, Eagan Padros. When the man shows his disrespect, Gregorin sets him straight on who Rand is (TPoD, Ch. 13).
  • Gregorin, Tolmeran, Weiramon and Rosana arrive with the news that the men nearby acquiesced, just to find Rand laughing very hard -- what they cannot know is that Lews Therin had come back after having disappeared in Rand's head (TPoD, Ch. 14).
  • Rand Travels with his party, including Gregorin, to Illian. Even though some other noblemen mutter about the foot soldiers, Gregorin keeps his thoughts to himself (TPoD, Ch. 21).
  • In the battle against the Seanchan, Gregorin follows Weiramon's charge in the beginning, but several battles later he fights alongside Davram Bashere or leads his soldiers, shouting encouragement. After Rand is Healed from his arrow wound, Gregorin reports that the Seanchan have retreated and recommends they leave the fighting and be content with their current victory (TPoD, Ch. 23).

Relationships

As an Illianer, Gregorin bears great dislike for any Tairen, especially for Weiramon Saniago and the other High Lords and Ladies (TPoD, Ch. 13).

At first, Rand does not think Gregorin too bright and does not trust him (TPoD, Ch. 21). After the battles against the Seanchan, he thinks he can trust him (TPoD, Ch. 24) and later names him his Steward of Illian (WH, Prologue).

Quotes

"'These peasants could never have found the mettle to stay under arms without encouragement,' Weiramon continued smoothly, ignoring Rosana. He was skilled at ignoring who, and what, he did not want to see or hear. He was a fool. 'May I suggest my Lord Dragon look to these so-called Nine for the source?'
'I do protest this Tairen pig's insults, Majesty!' Gregorin growled right atop him, one hand darting to his sword. 'I do protest most heartily!'"
(Weiramon and Gregorin on their way to Sammael's soldiers; The Path of Daggers, Chapter 13)

"Only Bashere and Gregorin spoke for turning back, and raise their voices they did increasingly as Rand stood silent. Silent and staring west. Toward Ebou Dar.
'We did do what we came for,' Gregorin insisted. 'Light's mercy, do you think to take Ebou Dar itself?'"
(Gregorin to Rand after the battle against the Seanchan; The Path of Daggers, Chapter 23)
