Larine Ayellin
Author: Atarah al'Norahn
General
Larine Ayellin is a girl from Emond's Field (LoC, Ch. 10).
Larine is described as a willowy girl with her hair braided. She is three years younger than Rand (LoC, Ch. 10), and about the same age as Egwene (CoT, Ch. 30). She has always had a good opinion of herself, and is pretty enough for all the boys in Emond's Field to have confirmed it for her (LoC, Ch. 10).
Larine has the ability to channel (LoC, Ch. 10). She is strong enough to become Aes Sedai, if she has the gumption to stick with it (CoT, Ch. 30).
Timeline
- She is one of the girls that Alanna and Verin bring out of the Two Rivers to take to the White Tower. [Rand] sees her and the others at Culain's Hound (LoC, Ch. 10).
- When the girls don't believe that he is the Dragon Reborn, Rand wraps Bode and Larine up in flows of air and lifts them until their shoes dangle a foot above the floor. Larine is terrified; her face seems drained of blood and her mouth gapes as wide as it will go, as if she wants to scream but has forgotten how. As soon as Rand lets them go, they flee towards the other girls, clutching one another. Rand tries to tell them that he won't hurt them, but they won't look at him (LoC, Ch. 10).
- After Rand leaves, Larine blubbers that they have to leave Caemlyn immediately. She is afraid that he will kill them. Verin wants to smack the girls for behaving so hysterically after Rand leaves; she thinks that there is an excuse for some of the younger ones, but that the older ones like Larine are supposed to be women. Alanna and Verin make the girls go to their rooms, and have tea with honey and brandy sent to them to help calm them down (LoC, Ch. 11).
- Larine and the other Two Rivers girls arrive in the rebel Aes Sedai camp (TPoD, Ch. 30).
- As a member of Nicola's novice "family" in Salidar, Larine helps cover up Nicola's escape from Salidar. Tiana plans to punish them all until Nicola is found. Sheriam tells Egwene that Larine is one of the girls who helped Nicola's escape, thinking that Egwene might want to pardon the novices because Larine is among them. Egwene replies that she will not pardon them, saying that if Larine thinks that she can get away with helping a novice to escape, what else will she think she can do? (CoT, Ch. 30).
Relationships
All of the Emond's Field girls, even Larine, admire and are a touch envious of Faile (LoC, Ch. 10).
Larine, like most of the novices, does not like Nicola. She is one of the novices who covers up Nicola's flight from Salidar, afraid that she will return (CoT, Ch. 30).
Larine and Egwene were close friends growing up. They used to spend hours together gossiping and practicing braiding their hair for when the Women's Circle said they were old enough. She is one of the few Emond's Field girls who seem to believe that Egwene is the real Amyrlin Seat, though she keeps her distance from Egwene (CoT, Ch. 30).
Miscellaneous
In Emond's Field, she bought a Domani dress, but her mother made her take it back to the seamstress (LoC, Ch. 10).
Egwene thinks to herself that Larine must take the punishment she has earned by covering up Nicola's escape (CoT, Ch. 30).
Quotes
Larine sniffed and folded her arms beneath her breasts. "As soon as I saw that coat I knew you had gotten a big head, running off with an Aes Sedai the way you did. I knew it before you talked so disrespectfully to Alanna Sedai and Verin Sedai. But I didn't know you had become a stone blind jack-fool." (Larine to Rand; Lord of Chaos, Chapter 10)
