Jonai was a Da'shain Aiel during the Breaking of the World. Together with his wife Alnora he had three children, Adan, Esole and Willim. His father was Coumin. Upon his first appearance in Rand's vision he was a tired, old man with gray hair and in his next he was a sixty-three-year-old man "in the prime of his life" with sun-red hair.

Solinda gave Jonai the task of leading the Da'shain Aiel out of Paaran Disen with some chora cuttings and wagonloads of objects of the Power to find a place of safety. It pained him very much every time they had to abandon the wagons with the things the Aes Sedai had put in their charge. Before he died of a heart attack, he told his son Adan to keep the Covenant and take the Aiel south.

• His father had served Solinda Sedai when he was young.

• He had ridden on Someshta's shoulders when he was a child.

• He always acted on Alnora's Dreams.

• After Alnora's death he saw an Aes Sedai for the last time. She claimed Ishamael still touched the world.
