General

Uno Nomesta is a warrior from Shienar. He is rough-tongued, has a long scar down his face, and one of his eyes is missing (TGH, Ch. 9).

His tongue is like a file, and he would treat anyone other than Lord Agelmar like a raw recruit. Despite his tongue, he gives good advice. Uno has been campaigning since before Lord Ingtar Shinowa was born (TGH, Ch. 10).

As a typical Shienaran warrior, his head is shaved, leaving only a topknot. To hide his missing eye, he wears a painted eye patch with a permanently frowning eye in fiery red. He wields a two-hand sword, strapped to his back through a slit in his cloak (TDR, Ch. 1).

Uno has a villainous look, even when he is laughing, and he wears his sword strapped to his back, with the hilt rising above his right shoulder (TFoH, Ch. 37).

He has slightly bowed legs, caused by him being used to sitting on the back of a horse, rather than walking himself (TFoH, Ch. 38).

Timeline

  • In Shienar, when Rand tries to get out of the fortress to go hunting rabbits, Ragan and Masema will not let him out because Uno has given them an order, supposedly from Lord Agelmar himself, telling them to not let anyone out (TGH, Ch. 3).
  • When Rand and the others leave Fal Dara to hunt for the Horn of Valere, Uno is among the Shienaran warriors following Lord Ingtar. Uno is one of the warriors nodding to Rand, instead of turning away (TGH, Ch. 9).
  • Uno is staring at Rand, and Rand wonders why he is staring at him like that. Despite the speed they are travelling at, and the heavy armours they wear, none of the Shienarans, including Uno, look as if they are even breaking a sweat (TGH, Ch. 10).
  • When they are served dinner, Uno is second in the line, which shows his rank among the Shienarans. When Rand is served his dinner, Masema tries to make the stew overflow on his coat. Uno reacts with cuffing Masema, telling him that there is not enough food for Masema to be spilling it everywhere (TGH, Ch. 10).
  • When Rand joins Ingtar, he wants to know why Uno is always looking at him. Ingtar says that he is probably trying to find out if Rand is worthy of a heron-mark blade (TGH, Ch. 10).
  • The day after, the party finds an abandoned village, and Uno once again has to examine tracks. Suddenly, he stops in the middle of a sentence, and when he begins talking again, he says that he saw a woman inside one of the houses. When the woman disappears, the rest of the party believes that Uno scared her away, or that he saw a curtain (TGH, Ch. 10).
  • To go on, they have to cross a river. The two warriors who cross the river first to get the ferry are wet and cold, and Uno is given the task of finding dry clothes and something warm to put in them (TGH, Ch. 10).
  • When he finally crosses the river, he is told that the rest of the party has found two Shienaran warriors skinned alive. Spitting, he says that Trollocs do that sometimes, to frighten people (TGH, Ch. 10).
  • The next time they find an abandoned village, Ingtar orders Uno to take one file and search all the houses, without frightening the villagers if they find any (TGH, Ch. 10).
  • When they stop for the night, Rand hears Uno claiming that he saw the same woman again, but no one believes him. He is then ordered to make sure that the watch is changed every two hours (TGH, Ch. 11).
  • Lord Ingtar starts talking to Rand, and tells him that it is not Uno who is second in command - it is Rand. Uno and Ingtar were called to Lord Agelmar the morning they left Fal Dara, and told that Rand was the one who should be given the command if something happened to Ingtar (TGH, Ch. 11).
  • Uno is offended when Rand, Loial and Hurin disappear, because failure reflects badly on his skill. By Ingtar's orders, he goes over the ground again, but no one can find any tracks (TGH, Ch. 14).
  • Perrin tells Ingtar that he can use his nose to track Fain, and Ingtar agrees, since Uno will see enough of their tracks to be able to confirm whether it is Fain's trail or not (TGH, Ch. 14).
  • A few of the Shienarans are skeptical towards Perrin, but after Uno nods in approval, they are convinced (TGH, Ch. 14).
  • They go on, and then they come to the mountains. No one likes them very much, and Perrin notices that Uno is watching the mountains uncomfortably. As Perrin and Ingtar are talking, Uno joins them and tells that there is an Aiel in the rocks, heading their way (TGH, Ch. 28).
  • When the party gets to Cairhien, Uno and the rest of the warriors stay in the Foregate, because they do not want to stay inside the Cairhien walls (TGH, Ch. 31).
  • Uno is leading ten Shienarans when Rand and the others go to Lord Barthanes' manor. The Shienarans join the other escorts outside the house, where they wait until Rand, Mat, Perrin and the others come back out. The Shienarans then escort them to their inn before Uno leads the Shienarans back to the Foregate (TGH, Ch. 33).
  • Uno and the other Shienarans enter Stedding Tsofu together with Rand and the others, but Erith, daughter of Iva daughter of Alar, asks them to wait outside the stedding, and every Shienaran except Hurin and Ingtar leaves the stedding to wait Outside (TGH, Ch. 35).
  • Hurin runs to fetch Uno and the Shienarans when Rand and the others come out from the stedding, and Uno joins them just before they reach the Waygate (TGH, Ch. 36).
  • After they have tried to use the Waygate, Rand decides to try a Portal Stone instead, and as Verin Sedai tells them to come closer, Uno is cursing because someone is hanging back (TGH, Ch. 37).
  • When they arrive on Toman Head, Uno is seen kneeling on the ground, scrubbing his hand across his mouth, after he has vomited (TGH, Ch. 37).
  • On Toman Head, they find an abandoned village, and Uno is once again told to have some of the warriors search through the buildings. He then reports to Ingtar, telling him that there is not a soul to be found, and that half the houses are stripped to the floors (TGH, Ch. 41).
  • As they wait for Perrin, Mat, and Hurin to come back to the camp, Uno and the other Shienarans oil their swords or keep watch through the trees. When the scouting party comes back with news, Uno wants to be among those going to Falme, but Verin will not let him, claiming that not all of them can go, and that the Seanchan will surely notice twenty soldiers (TGH, Ch. 44).
  • After Rand and Ba'alzamon have battled in the clouds, Uno and the rest of the Shienarans want to pledge themselves to him. Rand tries to convince them that their oaths are to Ingtar and Lord Agelmar, but Uno says that nothing holds them (TGH, Ch. 49).
  • Uno is among the five men and Perrin scouting when they have their camp in the Mountains of Mist, and he is so used to Perrin's eyes that even though he is a little doubtful, he is not surprised when Perrin sees a Tinker woman coming toward them long before he himself sees it (TDR, Ch. 1).
  • After Masema makes a comment about how Tinkers are useless cowards, Uno ask him if he would have the nerve to ride up into the mountains alone, unarmed (TDR, Ch. 1).
  • When Rand makes his appearance in the camp, all the Shienarans bow, and ensure him that they stand ready, and that it is an honour to serve the Dragon Reborn (TDR, Ch. 2).
  • Uno is present when Moiraine brings fresh news from Almoth Plain. He comments that the Whitecloaks have never sent half their strength to other places than Amador before. He tries his best to not curse in front of the Aes Sedai, something that makes his voice creak. When Lan says that the Dark One has killers you won't notice, Uno shivers (TDR, Ch. 3).
  • After the Shadowspawn attacked the camp, Masema starts talking about how even wolves fight for the Dragon Reborn, and that they must spread the word. Uno tells him to shut up. Uno then says that they will at least have wolf hides to keep the wounded warm. When Perrin refuses to let them skin the dead wolves, Uno first frowns and wants to argue, but Perrin's piercing stare makes him change his mind, and he tells the men to bury the wolves (TDR, Ch. 5).
  • After Rand disappears, Moiraine summons Uno to her hut, and he and Masema come back out before Perrin enters. Uno then vanishes toward the rock wall beyond the hut. He comes back in as Moiraine is talking with Perrin, Min and Loial, but Moiraine waves him to silence. She then asks him if he has had any strange dreams, and he reluctantly tells her that he has dreamt of a sword the past few nights. After a little while, he remembers that he has followed Rand's tracks. Moiraine tells him that he and the rest of the Shienarans will be given enough gold to go to Jehannah, and the name of someone there who will give them more (TDR, Ch. 6).
  • The next time anyone sees Uno is when Nynaeve is watching Elayne perform with Valan Luca's menagerie in Samara. She notices a man watching Elayne and thinks he looks vaguely familiar. When Uno comments on Elayne's performance afterwards, Nynaeve recognizes him, and she follows him (TFoH, Ch. 37).
  • Uno does not stop to watch anything at the menagerie except the snake and the lions, before he stops to look at the s'redit. Nynaeve manages to make her way to him. He does not recognise her before she mentions Rand's name. He then drags her off, away from other people, refusing to answer any question before no one can hear (TFoH, Ch. 38).
  • Uno uses so many bad words that Nynaeve has to tell him to stop, while following him into the city. She asks him a lot of questions, and he explains that he is in Samara with the Prophet, Masema. Uno offers to take her to Masema, and to have him find a boat down the river for her (TFoH, Ch. 38).
  • On their way to see Masema, they are accompanied by Ragan, who is among the few Shienaran who do not actually follow the Prophet. When they come to the house Masema lives in, Uno and Ragan give their weapons to the guards before they escort Nynaeve inside (TFoH, Ch. 39).
  • They have to wait for a while until they can go in to see Masema. When they are in the same room as Masema, Uno tells him who Nynaeve is before she has said too much to him. When they are to leave, Uno and Ragan hurry out, hustling Nynaeve with them. She is angry at them for not letting her stay and talk Masema into finding her a boat that very day, but Uno says that Masema would have laid hands on her if they had stayed. Uno and Ragan tell her about how Masema has been behaving since he became the Prophet. Suddenly, Uno says that there is a Whitecloak following them (TFoH, Ch. 39).
  • The Whitecloak is Galad, and Uno and Ragan, not knowing that Nynaeve knows him, prepare to fight for her, hiding her behind their own bodies in an alleyway. Nynaeve tells them to let him by, but they do not move until she has repeated herself. Even then, they do not put their swords away. After Nynaeve and Galad have talked, Uno and Ragan escort her back to the menagerie (TFoH, Ch. 40).
  • Uno comes to tell Nynaeve and the others that Masema has found a boat, and Nynaeve reminds him that he promised to obey her. Birgitte tries to flatter him (TFoH, Ch. 47).
  • In Samara, Uno and the others have to fight their way to the docks. When they get on the boat, Uno, Thom and Juilin help Nynaeve convince the captain to take all the poor people in Samara who want to leave with him (TFoH, Ch. 48; Ch. 49).
  • Nynaeve has to ask Uno and the Shienarans to put their swords away when the Gaidin surround them in the woods outside Salidar (TFoH, Ch. 50).
  • Uno offers to steal some horses for the women if they want to run away from the village, but when the women tell him they're staying, but that he can leave if he wants, he changes his mind and says that he cannot steal any horses from the Warders (TFoH, Ch. 50).
  • Gareth Bryne wants the Shienarans to train new soldiers for him, and Uno says that he will ask the others (TFoH, Ch. 50).
  • When Uno and Nynaeve pass each other in the street of Salidar, Uno smiles warmly at her, but Nynaeve just grimaces at him (LoC, Ch. 8).
  • After Nynaeve asks Birgitte if she could find a horse for her, Birgitte says that Uno was just telling her something, but before she can finish talking, Nynaeve cuts her off, telling her that Uno is not to be involved (LoC, Ch. 12).
  • Uno looks at Nynaeve as she passes him in the street, and Nynaeve thinks that Birgitte has talked to him, because he always looks as if he is waiting for orders to find horses (LoC, Ch. 29).
  • He leads a small number to safety after they are overwhelmed (AMoL, Ch. 30).

Relationships

Uno would treat everyone as a raw recruit, except Lord Agelmar (TGH, Ch. 10).

At first he was sceptical towards Rand, trying to find out if he is worthy of carrying an Aes Sedai-made sword. Then Uno swore fealty to him, believing that Rand was a great man, before he became more casual, accepting Rand as the Dragon Reborn, but not worshiping him like Masema (TGH, Ch. 10; Ch. 49; TDR, Ch. 2; TFoH, Ch. 39).

He respects Nynaeve, and tries his best to avoid cursing after she has said that he is not allowed to, but he fails. After swearing to follow her lead, he is ready to do anything for her (TFoH, Ch. 38; Ch. 39).

Miscellaneous

  • Cursing is a part of his blood, so to speak. When he has to watch his language in front of Moiraine there is sweat on his forehead from the effort of talking without cursing. Nynaeve has to tell him to watch his tongue more than once (TDR, Ch. 3; TFoH, Ch. 38).
  • Uno would gladly get killed himself, if that helped him protect and save a woman (TFoH, Ch. 40).

Quotes

"'Bloody Darkfriends and Trollocs went straight through, my Lord,' Uno said, pointing to a few tracks not chopped to pieces by the Shienarans. 'Straight through to the goatkissing ferry, which they bloody left on the other side. Blood and bloody ashes! We're flaming lucky they didn't cut it adrift.'" (Uno when they are in the first abandoned village; The Great Hunt, Chapter 10).

"'It is said,' the one-eyed man said carefully, 'that when the Dragon is Reborn, he will break all oaths, shatter all ties. Nothing holds us, now. We would give our oaths to you.' He drew his sword and laid it before him, hilt toward Rand, and the rest of the Shienarans did the same." (After Rand battles Ba'alzamon at Falme; The Great Hunt, Chapter 49).

"'Why, he's the bloody Prophet they've all come to hear. Would you like to meet him?' He gave the impression of counting his sentences. Nynaeve breathed deeply; the man was going to take her literally. 'He might find you a flaming boat, if you want one. In Ghealdan, what the Prophet wants, the Prophet usually gets.'" (Talking with Nynaeve, after she has told him to curse only every other sentence; The Fires of Heaven, Chapter 38).
